Headphone monitoring?

Hi,

How do I get what I am singing in the mic to come through in the headphones, with everything else, while I'm recording? I can't seem to get that working!

Thanks

Edit: Cool Edit Pro with an MXL USB.007 mic plugged directly into the computer.

Hi again,

Have I posted to the right place, or have I gone about this the right way? I do want to respect the way things work around here, but it's my first time so I want to be sure.

Thanks again.

You are good.

This is something I could normally describe to someone but... the USB mic is something I have never messed with and cool edit pro is very outdated so I have a hard time remembering the settings as I have not used it in about 8 years.

Honestly I would upgrade my audio software just so you can have a larger pool of users to ask questions.

Reaper and Krystal audio are both free(ish), support the new standards and have a ton of users for support.

That being said, I think we have a CEP user or two on these forums but I can't remember who they are.

Hi CptTripps,

Unfortunately, at this point I'm nearing the end of a recording I've been working on for months, and I'd really like to finish it without the hassle of trying to transfer things. Maybe I'll just try to do it with the headphones half off, like I've always done.

But I'll check out the programs you suggested. I've heard good things about Reaper from another source so I'll try that one first.

In the meantime, if anyone should read this that knows the answer, feel free to chime in.

Thanks for your help.

CEP has been gone for longer than I'd care to even know -- But can't you make a headphone mix with it somewhere? Seems like an awfully basic function...

You're right. It does seem like an awfully basic function. That's why I'm so frustrated with it. I've combed the program options so often, including all the how-tos and the FAQs and everything. I've played with every volume control on the computer, as well.

I'm getting the impression that it should do this automatically, but that maybe it doesn't work with a USB mic plugged into the port at the front of the computer. And the ports at the back aren't USB 2.

To make things worse, every time I try to download anything off the internet, it gives me this weird message that says I can't download this because I can't change the contents of some kind of temp file it uses to download. So I can't even get a free version of reaper.

I have a copy of Music Maker 14. Maybe I should try that. But I like CEP so much. It's simple, has a good interface and I'm used to it, of course. It does everything I need it to do, because I use mostly live instruments and only need an effects rack after that.

Maybe it's time for a visit to Future Shop, but I don't have a lot of cash on hand, don't you know.

Well, I mean - Does it have aux sends or not?

I'm checking it out now. I'm really not much of a tech guy, I'm just a musician. I don't really know where I should be looking, but I'm looking.

I know that when I click on the out button for a track, all it gives me is a choice between my Realtek rear output speakers and the wave mapper.

I can't find anything that even mentions it. But I think I may have found something.

The Realtek Audio Manager doesn't seem to recognize the USB microphone. It would seem that it only recognizes devices that are plugged into the color coded jacks in the front and in the back, not the USB ports.

At the same time, I have only ONE wire coming from the speakers into the green jack in the back of the computer, but the Audio Manager indicates a "Mic in" (pink) and a "Line in" (blue), but I have nothing plugged into those jacks!

So the headphones still play everything that is already recorded, and CEP records everything coming from the USB mic, but it doesn't play what's going into the mic, through the headphones, while I'm recording.

Maybe I need a wire that plugs into my mic and has a single plug to go into one of the color coded jacks at the other end. That might change something. But then it won't be taking advantage of the speed of the USB 2, and that might cause latency problems. But it might be worth a try.

It's been a very long time since I've used CEP but if I remember correctly you really need a mixer to monitor the record signal as CEP doesn't have input monitoring like current DAW's.

You might try bringing up the Windows sound mixer and go to the record settings and make sure there is a check in the Monitor box, not sure how that is going to work with a USB mic though.

Well, I'm still working on it, but thanks for your suggestions. I'm going to check out olddog's now.
