i want my kids to grow up to be serial killers, so that in mind, i give them full use of the internet with a push towards all the bad stuff, you know, like beastiality, rough porn, bum fights, jackass and that sorta thing.
Not sure if its working as yet but i guess i will find out soon enough.
As long as they dont lean towards parent killing then i guess im in the clear.

:geez i hope this thread is spam and i havent got it wrong.

I think this person was genuinely asking.

Or was spam, heck, i dunno.

For my kids, we have our house PC in the main room / living room, against a wall, with the screen visible to the whole room.

Pretty difficult to be deviant that way. Well, at least when we are home, anyway.

We don't have our kids with PCs in their rooms. They do have ipod touches, however, so I'd say they still have some unfettered access.

I assume it was spam, and I almost deleted it...but eh, they get no SEO benefit and we haven't had a spammer to mock in a few days so I left it up.

Depends on the age a tad but; yeah I plan on monitoring (more likely restricting) my kids computer/internet access.

So we're leaving the SPAM up eh? Sounds like it's time to counter-SPAM...

Tripps, if you're going to protect your kids from the nasties of Internet surreality...I highly recommend Webroot ChildSafe. I've worked with the software on numerous occasions. Mostly in my Nerd Herd days. It's got a really intuitive interface with very powerful features.

You start with a big spreadsheet. Computer/Internet access rights on one axis, and time on the other axis. There are separate pre-sets for weekdays and weekends. You can restrict Internet, applications, Active X plugins (I think), pretty much anything you could possibly want. There's a keylogger too...I kind of have ethical problems with this feature. What kids say isn't always what they mean to say...but you likely understand that all too well, ha.

In that case, I would have posted under Computers & Software. Glad you are not the spammer we all thought you were though ;)

Anyways, win7 does most of what I need to do in regards to time restrictions, programs and game ratings. All I would need is a site blocker that I can configure to only allow pbskids and nickjr in IE.

For kids and family members I usually suggest simply placing the computer in the living room with the screen facing away from the wall.

If kids have laptops remove the wireless network and only run wires to the living room or dining room.

heh Great spam!

The kids are pretty much grown now, and neither turned out to be sociopaths, but I'll never forget when we first came to the realization we needed to tighten-up our control of their internet use...

Poor Bobbo was eleven when he misspelled his image-search for 'skateboarding'... omitting the 'e'. 8 o

He came running from the 'computer room' of a friends house appologetically screaming "I'm NOT a pervert!".

Ahhhh, the joys of parenthood.

skatboarding? is that a form of torture? on second thought, I don't think I want to know.

I always wondered which moron at Microsoft decided to name their email service hotmail.com. That's a homonym to be wary of on the internet...ha

You may be too young to remember Quincy, but Microsoft bought Hotmail, it didn't come up with Hotmail on it's own. Better question is which moron at Microsoft DIDN'T come up with Hotmail. Oh, all of them.

By the way there is a music video ad in spanish on this page. Interesting.

umm, maybe I wasn't clear.

"Hey man you should try out this new email service, Hotmail.com!"

"Why would I go to hotmale.com? This conversation makes me question the foundation of our friendship."

No, I got it, I just felt the need to tangentialize the conversation for some unexplicable reason...

Sienna, your kids are going to see and hear everything eventually. The internet can allow them to see and hear things sooner than you want them to, but if you choke a wire coming into your house it's only going to keep your kid from getting the info at home.

I think this sounds familiar because I went down the street to get what my parents didn't want me to know.

Personally, I have a parental lock on the Fox News channel for when my in-laws visit. The adults are the hardest to control.

lol Herb, I need to do that when I go home to visit my parents! My dad insists that Fox news is the only unbiased news outlet around...that worries me deeply now that I've actually watched that channel a bit.
