Why do most youtube videos and such sound like TOTAL crap? Some sort of clipping often, no depth or clarity, sometimes just giving me the impression of "smashed" somehow. By youtube videos, i mean the typical upload of a song from an album with lyrics or the album art added in. I used to not really notice, especially on laptop speakers and little to no knowledge/ ear for such a thing. But ya, what makes those sound so....yuck.

I'm guessing somewhere along the lines the MP3 is either at fault, or the MP3 gets converted into something else and it sounds horrible, lower resolution maybe?

most likely lower everything and higher compression, VERY high cmopression, listening to songs on myspace is almost excruciating now coz everything is so compressed. They have to do it obviously to save bandwidth and all that other technical junk, but yeah, i guess until the technology supports higher quality streaming, this is wat were stuck with.

Some ppl say the HD function on some youtube vids yields better suodn as well as video. I would agree to some extent but i guess i cant say definitively.. or spell definitively either

High compression? File compression, right? And thanks! i'll find a way to try and upload the video in HD then.

Yeah file compression to an extent (from my understanding) does translate a bit into something that sounds like audio compression eventually, since file compression means dropping out things the computer doesnt think is necessary and then squeezing the remaining parts into a smaller space. Sounds a bit like a compressor eh? I could be totally wrong but thats how i understand it and it sounds like it to me. Also there r things like dithering going on, again i could be wrong, but since the information is being altered by a computer its not being done by a human that cares about the "musicality" of it, much like in dithering its a process made important because of computers and the digital world but has to be overseen by humans to make sure it comes out musical.

Even at HD quality im quite sure any work u put online for streamign will take a beating considering the difference between the size of a Wav file and an MP3

I dare say my youtube upload does not sound bad (compressed and uploaded directly from Adobe premiere). Don't remember what my username is there but it's either "Jamie Spurgeon" or "CptTripps" if you wanna check it out. It is also linked from my facebook page (Jamie Spurgeon) if you can't find it on youtube.

I kept the video small and the audio as high as it would let me.

I don't notice mine being any worse quality than when i recorded, but just because i didn't notice isn't always a sure thing. But mostly just the videos uploaded with lyrics attached or just an album picture (i personally don't care to see the lyrics while i listen, i find it distracting actually. Like i somehow take and retain more of the meaning/ "wow..." factor from good lyrics if i just hear them sung or even read them like poetry. I think i find it hard to read and listen simultaneously).

I would agree that not all of them sound or far from how u upload them, but remmeber that u guys take alot of care for ur audio quality, like CptTripps there just admitted to allowing his video quality to suffer for his audio

im sure alot of the ppl putting songs with pics n lyrics (kids mostly?) have no idea wat is the best Wav>Converter so their uploading low quality audio into a system that will degrade it even more

As in the original post u said some audio was worse than others, i answered saying the system messes up but i guess i should have added that the inconsistency from video to video is most likely dependant on the upload savvy of each person

Nothing new, but here is the vid I spoke of.

The quality is ok but that's more to do with my skill at the time than compression.

The timing of audio to video is a little off and all my doing as I am very new to editing video.

I've always noticed the same with myspace. Especially at the high end. Does anyone mix differently specifically for myspace? Ive heard of people brick wall filtering at 10khz but I tried it to no avail.

Srry, slightly different subject to YouTube, I apologise, but thought it kind of fitted... I've always wondered about it...

Ive read interviews indicating major labels having seperate versions of songs made to make the most out of streaming on popular sites, so ppl do do it and it is a consideration

I found my audio was fine when uploading in a Hi Def 780 format, though I professionally recorded it more or less with good equipment. A lot of folks just use web cam mics or whatever, so often the original vid is the problem far above video compression.

When I was doing some home made music videos a couple of years back I decided that hosting the videos on myspace provided much better quality than youtube.. just a thought, though im sure codecs have changed by then. I do remember however the youtube audio sounding really bad, I dont think it was even in stereo, hence why I chose myspace instead. I also discovered the best quality of video was got from uploading divx files as opposed to mpegs

well if ur going for quality things ilke Vimeo and Dailymotion will supply that, but obviously most ppl choose youtube becoz its popular... and then youtube consequently has to the limit the quality of its streaming to be able to support the high traffic. But the hi-def function has likely made this point moot.
