Actually had a recording session tonight

For the first time in probably 2 years, I actually sat down in my own studio and played with the "record" button pressed. I just recorded twin guitars for a rock song I made up on the spot, gonna add some drums and bass guitar over the weekend and call it done.

Nobody will hear it except a friend of mine that I think can help turn it in to a full-fledged song (its just an intro, verse, chorus, and some riff ideas now).

But it felt good to do something in my own studio again! New computer works OK so far, got a buzz in the guitar tracks that I've gotta track down. Drums sound awesome (Battery 3 with a MIDI controller keyboard), and I've switched from Cubase to Reaper. So I'm using new software at pretty much every turn so everything is still going very slow. It took me about 3 hours to write and record 2 satisfactory yet sloppy guitar tracks and doodle around with some drums. It'll get slicker the more I do it, but man it's been a long time since I've actually produced anything out of this equipment!

Just thought I'd share.

Deon:
I was using a really basic version of Cubase (SE1), and it was OK but not really good. I've used SX1 and SX2 and they were OK as well, mainly for the added effects they come with. The workflow is a little weird in Cubase, but its been the DAW software that I've had allegience to since I first started doing this.

Reaper has a better workflow, I think. There are still several things that I'm getting used to, things that are in different terminology between the two proggies, or where things are in different places (I do kinda miss Cubase's transport bar that you could put anywhere...I keep forgetting where the hell the basic stop, play, rec buttons are in Reaper, even though they're always in the same place).

Reaper has been a little flakier on me as far as crashing too. It agrees with Battery much more than it agreed with Proteus X, Proteus X2, or Proteus VX. It seemed to hate those VSTi proggies.

Otherwise, I haven't really dug deep enough into Reaper's functionality to make more judgement than that. It's a great app for the price, no doubting that. There's no reason that any DAW software should cost $400 or $500. I dont' care what it does, it's not worth that much money, and Reaper has proven that. My setup isn't hi-fi enough to detect any sound quality differences between it and Cubase. it's no wonder that piracy of these apps is so rampant. Prices are way too inflated on this stuff. Too many people get their hands in the pot between the developer (who is overworked and underpaid) to the consumer.

Jim:
This take is too sloppy of an embarassment to share with anybody right now. When it turns into an actual song and not the result of an out-of-practice monkey banging on new buttons, I'll mix it down and share it :-)

Well...recording at your house is all well and good but if you ever decide to come out of your Chad-cave you should make it out to 47th and State Line sometime. I'm getting into the habit of recording someone every few weeks.

Tomorrow a fellow named Jason Vivone is going to record some country blues out here. A bunch of us will be grilling/smoking chicken and putting away the malted beverages. I've got a few Steel Reserve's laying around that could become yours...bitter cheap beer, mmmm.

Cool, Tad! Feels good, doesn't it? : )

Glad to hear Reaper is working out for you... it's got to be better than Cubase. I found Cubase to be one of the most un-intuitive progs I've tried-out for audio.

It took us changing the approach of our recording sessions to put the fun back into it, and make it something we wanted to do again. Change is good. : )

Yeah, I've found that I need to have everything laying out, ready to be picked up and played and mic'd up. If I have to drag stuff out of boxes or cases, I'm less inclined to actually get anything done. fortunately our basement stays humid enough to keep my guitars out in the open instead of in their cases.

I'm the same way Tad, I hate getting everything setup, once I have it all out I'll play & record for hours. Hard to believe I ever had the patience to record back when I was using an 8 track reel to reel. LOL
