64 Bit DAWs

I recently purchased a computer with 8 GB of RAM thinking, "hell, no VST will have trouble loading now, regardless of my project size."

However, that isn't quite true. I think the experienced limitations are due to my 32 bit DAW software that all the VST's are loaded into.

Anyone know of (or have experience with) progress towards x64 bit processing and the increased memory addressing it provides?

surprise!!! ... 32bit OS's can only allocate under 4GB of ram... usually a max of ~3GB...

I run the 64bit Ubuntu Studio and only really notice it with video.... but most *nix based video apps are assuming you're 64bit now.

Haha yeah, I should have known that! I even use the Laatido service for vsti's, games, etc. on my laptop to give it a little performance boost. I thought that the fact that I was running Windows 7 x64 bit would eliminate that problem...but the x32 bit DAW software still presents the limit.

I'm not sure I understand the *nix reference, but I don't do much video editing.

I've always been intimidated by the idea of using Ubuntu or any form of Linux, despite thousands of reports that IF you can get it up and running it's very efficient. Do you have much trouble getting VSTi's to run on Ubuntu?

If running 64 bit OS your PC can definitely use the 8 GB o ram, the DAW should not have a limitation as the OS allocates the RAM.

In my experience though, VST seem to be more processor dependant and with VSTi, if running one hard drive I think that can also cause a hit in performance, maybe Noize will chime in on the benefits of have VSTi's on a second hard drive.

Your PC is more than capable though as far as OS, CPU and Ram. I run an i7 processor and love that thing to death :)
