How many 58's do you have? I use a similar mic to the SM58 on my kick drum and it sounds fine. Of course, you have to add a ton of EQ, but you have to do that anyway. Just experiment with the EQ on everything. Generally you want to scoop out the mids a lot on drums.

aren't SM58s just SM57s with a small presence boost for vocalists?

Yeah - they are are very similar - i believe that 57's can take slightly higher SPL's as well - but I may be off on that.

Crux - how many mic's do you have at your disposal, if you have 4 you should be fine with a fair amount of EQ.

Mic the kick, snare and put the other two near the toms - they should happily pick up cymbal spill.

jues.

The SM58 is electronically identical to the SM57. The main difference is the "ball" pop screen. If you unscrew the ball it will be vertually identical to the 57, in sound anyway. Mic placement is crucial when recording any acoustic source. Don't be afraid to spend some time moving things around to find the right sweet spots. Be prepaired to spend some time "tuning" the drums as well.

I'd hit a music store and try to work a trade for some 57's. The Audix kit that we have is killer too. Before we had that we used 3 57's and a beta 52 for the kick with a couple 58's for room mics. Not the best setup in the world but it worked. The Audix pencil condensors that we have now are smokin'. Even with the Audix's we're still usin' 57's on the snare.
There are people on here that are way more knowledgeable than I am about this stuff though.
Still4given gave the best advice. Anything will work, it all depends on how you work it. Definately take some time to experiment. Drums are a pain!!!!!!!!
There's some really informative articles listed in the recording tips section that helped us out a ton. Check 'em out.
