Upgrade interface or upgrade monitors?

I'm in the process of looking to upgrade my current home studio setup and I've run into a small problem. I'm running Logic 8 and I'm coming out of my computer into a very out dated USB interface by Alesis and then going into my monitors (Event TR8s).

Well I've had my eye on the Apogee Duet to upgrade my interface because I'm not doing much tracking at my place right now but I am doing a lot of mixing and I wanted the D/A converters of the Apogee over my antiquated Alesis board. Well, I was talking to someone about this and they said I would notice a MUCH bigger difference if I upgraded my monitors before my interface. They suggested the Focal CMS 50 for the upgrade.

Should I upgrade the interface or the monitors?

Which will improve the mix most?

Are the Event TR8's that bad? As far as I know with monitors, once you get a handle on them and know what they sound like all should be well. I would say a properly treated mixing room would be more beneficial than a different set of monitors.

Alas, you have the possibility to get the same mix using two different monitors so I would upgrade the interface for cleaner captures.
