The Master Plan (need help)

So, bad money times, no cash to put out the money i want to to get an awesome studio set up, so here's my plans.
I want to be able to record guitar, either through micing, direct preamp guitar recording, or plug ins. I'll need to be able to either program drums, mic drums, or record an electronic kit, ideally all three need to be possible. bass as well, of course vocals. reverb and delays for that, not that big of a deal.
The challenging thing for me to figure out is a way to use symphonic sounds, I'm sure there's a plug in somewhere so I'll need a Midi keyboard, cheaper the better. I saw the Line6 one, any opinions on that would be cool.
I need to be able to record at least 8 channels at the same time. I'll be using Logic. I need a good firewire interface. compressor, mic preamp, word clock, etc

so. I've seen Motu, I might get one of those till i can get Ensemble. it's like 899, can't remember exactly
for a word clock I head good things about the Lucid something, it's $799
I like UA preamps, so one twin fifty at 750 for now would be good.
what are other studio essentials? i want just sub-pro quality, since i don't have the money for pro quality. thanks.

compressors i have no idea.

Hmm, you're a little out of my expertise, but I'm sure someone can chime in.

Is a wordclock necessary? I'm not sure exactly what they do...
