questions about dual boot

I finished reading the new article on dual booting and found it very informative and helpful. ive been planning on doing this for a little while and just ordered anothher 80gig internal drive to go along with my current 40gig drive. ill be using the new drive for audio work only. i have a couple of questions about the article though, specifically about installing drivers and configuring internet applications after formatting. im not sure what drivers my computer has or what applications use them or what. i know my sound card uses them (WMD and Asio im pretty sure) and probably the graphics card but i dont really know what else does, or how to find out or how to reinstall them. will they be saved if i do a full backup?(i have windows xp pro)also im not sure what is meant by configuring internet applications.also, and this isnt as important, will i lose my bookmarks on the web browser? i appreciate any help with this stuff, and this site has been much help.

it really depends on what operating system with which you want to dual-boot. for example, linux and windows 2000 dual-boot systems use completely different drivers, and linux can usually find its appropriate driver as long as it's on the hardware compatibility list that would be displayed on the site of the particular version of linux.

i know a guy who dual boots between windows 98 and windows ME, leaving protools on win98. i really have no clue why he does that.

when you do dual-booting, you've also gotta be careful about the file system that is used by the operating system. for instance, if you booted between win98 and win2k, you most likely would use FAT32 for win98 and NTFS for win2k.

now with win2k, you'd be able to see the win98 drive and do stuff with the FAT32 drive's contents no problem. that's backwards compatibility. however with windows 98, the win2k drive would seem like an improperly formatted drive, and it would ask you if you wanted to format it if you tried to open it. formatting it would destroy everything on the win2k disk.

i personally think that dual-booting is a pain in the @$$, and i just use windows 2000 for both normal stuff and recording stuff.

it's easy to get out of hand with tech stuff like this because you see what you perceive to be benefits, but don't do anything without checking it out more and asking more questions.

hope this helps.

if i decide to do this, ill have xp pro on both partitions,so i wont need to worry about separate operating systems. that should cut down on the headache a bit, but it is still a project and im still debating whether im going to do it or not.

i don't understand why you would want two boots of the same OS...

the article on the home page of HRC can explain it better than i can but it basically creates one system boot which is streamlined for audio work only, it just gets rid of all the other programs and apps running on that partition so that the computer only has to deal with audio.
