Hi folks. I need some references about acoustic isolation. I am having a hard time trying to find material about that on the net. I need some simple advices and solutions mainly about double walls and what goes between them. I have found lots of texts on acoustic treatment but not acoustic isolation.

Thanx!

Bruno,

There's some pretty good info on Auralex's Acoustics101 website about this topic. Check it out below.

www.acoustics101.com/

If that doesn't answer your question(s) then let me know and I'll tryo to fill in some of the blanks.

Auralex is what I use here. I tried several others and they were not near as good. They have kits also that come complete with bass traps and diffusers and the like. Those are really the best bargain for room tuning.

I priced out Auralex kits and I got the feeling that they oversell their treatment. I've also heard that too much foam tends to kill the hi-end frequencies in a room. I ended up going with Microcosm acoustic panels myself and I'm quite happy with the look and the results. (The quote I got from Microcosm was less than half the price of the quote I got from Auralex, and the Microcosm stuff is panels, not foam that needs to be glued onto your wall.)

Nonetheless, our friend Bruno wants to know about isolation. I've heard that a space of four inches between two stud walls is good. Then you fill that space with fibreglass noise insulation. (Ask for noise insulation at your hardware store.) That should do the trick for you.

Well alex, we didnt send him to Arualex site to buy material, if you checked the address that blue posted, you will see that it is to an information center on exactly what he is after. they have information on how to build a room as well as treat it. And also what Alex stated about sound insulation is a good idea. Your local big box hardware dealer should be able to hook you up with that type of insulation.

bruno,if you are refering to the "room with in a room"method, then the only thing between the two walls should be an air gap.as for the walls themselves,2 inch thick 8 pound density rock wool works very well.
john sayers is one of the more knowledgable persons on the net when it comes to studio building and sound isolation.unfortunatly his site is down today.try a search on his name, you will be glad you did.
