Tascam 1641, Euphonix MC Control, Studio Monitor Express

Currently I need 4 XLR inputs (preamp, phantom power) and 4 line level inputs. I was thinking of getting the Tascam 1641, which seems like a great deal and has extra channels for future needs. My control surface is an Euphonix MC control and I hope to add their MC Mixer in the future. The Euphonix hardware comes bundled with Studio Monitor Express and I plan to use this combination as a virtual patch panel between the 1641 and my Mac audio app's. Anyone using this configuration? Any other audio interface I should be looking at in this price range?

Not really anything else in that range. They are either much cheaper or much more expensive. The next step up would be looking at something like the Icon system or the like. And that is a huge price jump from Euphonix.

While searching the web for 1641 info I came across several people who are using the 'Alesis IO|26' which is selling for about the same price. What's your opinion of this hardware relative to the 1641?

My personal opinion is the Tascam has a bit more bandwidth using USB the you will get with Firewire. It will be a little more stable as well. but many people do seem to like the Alesis as it has a few more i/o options with the 2 adat i/o connection's.

It is nice as well to have the meter function's on the interface which the Alesis has and the Tascam does not.

But that said, audio quality is pretty much the same so its really down to which i/o set up you like better. The Tascam does have more analog inputs, both have 8 XLR connection's but the Tascam has balanced 1/4 on 6 extra inputs.

I know thats not much but its a little more to think about.

I used to use a Tascam FW-1082 which gave me nothing but grief. It was constantly crashing (gray screen of death) the Mac. Some FIrewire devices work perfectly and others, like the 1082, don't. Regardless of the spec's, I've decided to buy the Tascam 1641 because it uses USB instead of Firewire... less chance of something going wrong.

And as I stated it is higher bandwidth as well. Which in turn should amount to slightly better performance.

So far, after many hours of trying, I'm having zero luck getting the 1641 working on my Mac. See my new post...
