Maximizing my A/D converter

I'm using the word clock built into my API A2D along with the A/D converter connected to my audio interface via SPDIF digital coax. As time goes on I'll want to purchase more quality preamps. Let's assume I buy a unit with dual pre-amps. Would it negatively affect the performance of the A/D converter if I were to track the two pre's on the A2D while also running two different pre-amps through the available inserts on th A2D? I understand that I will be limited to the 2 channels of digital output. I would use this type of setup on drums (thinking I could run snare/kick/OH/hhat through the 4 good pre-amps and let my ProjectMix pre-amps sully the toms.)

Instead of using the Y cable on the insert I was thinking I might be able to just plug the output of a different pre-amp into the insert?

I don't see anything in the manual that says its a bad idea (www.apiaudio.com/mana2d.pdf). I figure the thought is either crazy stupid or crazy awesome; but I've been erring on the crazy stupid side recently...RA 100 amplifier + favorite pair of monitoring headphones while tracking drums = pain followed by destruction beget dissappointment.

Maybe its just a bad idea altogether, dealing with 2 different signals on the same digital out might be more trouble than its worth...

To be honest, I've never thought to try that or known anyone that has done that. Although the return of the insert is looking for line level, and the pre amp signal should be line level. I don't know that you are going to have any kind of summing control over the mix of the two signal's and could simply end up with sonic mush at the AD output.

But as far as hurting anything, I'm honestly not sure at all..But thinking it would not.
