a passive pickup (think electric guitars) produces a very weak signal, much like a microphone....the first thing both are plugged into is a preamp (think gain knob)....
an acoustic electric that has a preamp built into it already puts out a line level....these are not for headphones.
some acoustics have a simple piezo pickup and no preamp..so they are not outputting a line level signal so do those pickups you can place inside the guitar.
the battery is a dead giveaway as to weather not it's active (line level) or passive (mic/instrument).
