Can you have too many monitors?

I have 2 KRK 8s, and a KRK 10 sub. My room is about 15 x 12 and is set up and treated about as well as I can with all the factors (money, various equipment, room logistics, current knowledge, etc.)

I got offered a cheap pair of KRK 5s. Would grabbing these benefit me in anyway? If so, would I run them at the same time as the others or a/b them during mixdowns to get multiple different feels for my mix? Meaning I could do a mix with just the 8s, just the 5s, the 8s and the sub, the 5s and the sub, and all 3. Is that what mutilple monitors are used for or do you always run them all at the same time?

I always see various monitors in bigger studios but not sure if it would make any sense for me to get additional near field monitors. Thoughts? Thanks.

yeah it's good to check mixes on DIFFERENT monitors...i think havin' just smaller versions of the ones you have isn't really worth it....havin' a smaller pair of monitors is great for checkin' to see how your mix sounds on smaller computer type speakers...but i'd get a completely different brand....KRKs are a bit dark sounding to me, so for a second pair of monitors i'd look into somethin' brighter sounding.

it sounds to me like yer only considering this because you can get a good deal on 'em...were you already lookin' into gettin' another set? if your mix's are translating just fine, i don't think a second pair will benefit you much.

i'd drop that same money into some small consumer audiophile quality speakers before buyin' a baby version of what you already have.

You know I would say that if you have too many different monitors that you don't have an opportunity to learn how they sound (characteristics) then ya, you have too many.

Multiple monitors = trying to hit a moving target.

Judging by Quincy's pic i would tend to agree with that MM.

And looking at Cpt's pic, i'm so jealous, i'm practically drooling. I'm finding more and more that 2 monitor (LCDs) are not enough.

Sorry, thread-jack. Cpt's fault.

Anyway, I'd think that at least listening to your stuff on different monitors will give you a little perspective, but I also see MM's point; you could be forever going back and forth, trying to make both sound good/great. I'd think a mix tween the two, shoot for your good pair, but sprinkle with the other pair(s).

I also see WYD's point. Lesser of the same model may not do much to change your picture of the mix, though it probably won't hurt. They will be different, so that's good.
