Total nightmare. All my projects seem to have vanished!

So i opened up ableton live 7 today for the first time in around 5 days. I already had cubase open by mistake (or vice versa) and wasn't intending to rewire so i closed both programs and then reopened ableton.

I quickly navigated up to the Open Recent Set button only to find that all the names of my files are in gray font (instead of black) and unselectable. This is around 8 months of work and yes i know, i should have had backups, but i didn't.

Where in the name of hell could these files be? I had around 2 months of material in my recycling bin (which i restored) and its been less than a week since i listened to my stuff but there was nothing there.

After endless searches i can't locate any of my old projects but i can create new ones. They should be in the library folder right?

I really really hope that this is just some stupid oversight. Any and all help is appreciated!

Try this software and see if it will help. I have used it in the past and it works well. It should reveal the files.

What happens when you search your entire data drive for *.wav? Maybe the files just got inadvertantly moved. In the search results, do whatever you have to to display the full pathname of each file found. If you see any .wav files that you know are associated with any of your projects, you can look at the pathname and see where the heck they were moved to. Definitely check the Recycle Bin, and if they don't turn up after that, use that software BH linked to above.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.

The only thing that seems to have worked (to some extent) so far was a non-indexed search in vista for the file extension .als (that’s what ableton uses). I get back around thirty or so Crash Files. These are in fact my original project files, or save states of them that ableton must have taken at some stage. The big problem with these files is that only the midi has survived. All audio appears as 'sample offline' . This is pretty crap as the stuff i most wanted to recover was the audio.

I'm gonna give that software a shot, although I'm not sure what exactly to expect.

I'm buying a dedicated USB stick ASAP for backup.

Ok. Problem solved. Just in case anyone ever has a similar problem:

The Crash Files are everything except the audio samples which were easily searched for and found from within the ableton file browser (double click on the missing sample itself, find the name of the sample in the tab, copy it, then click on the magnifying glass icon in the top left hand corner of the file browser and then paste).

No idea why this happened but I’m really happy to get my stuff back.

Also, The file rescue 4 program that was linked to above seems very promising. I'm keeping it installed. Thanks for the heads up!

File Resue has saved my *** before. It is a good product that works really well. Glad to hear you are back and running.
