hey! just wondering i dont think theres a set amount, but when your recording double vocals, with your main vocal, how many should u do that would sound the best .cuz i think with 2 u hear the vocals going off from eachother once and a while, maybe 3 or 4?

You want to get the doubled vocals pretty tight. It's the subtle differences between the 2 takes that gives it depth (same goes for recording heavy electric guitar parts). If there are parts where it's very conspicuous that it's doubled, you might want to punch in and retrack those parts until you get them tight as well. You should be able to achieve a nice, thick vocal with as few as 2 vocal parts in unison.

When you start to get 3, 4, 5 or whatever, then it starts to sound more like a chorus or choir than a single voice. That's nice if you're going for that effect, but keeping it down to 2 voices in unison will keep it from sounding like an ensemble. Just keep the performances as tight as possible.

Well, that's my opinion anyways. Probably not worth 2 cents but I'll charge that anyways.

Maybe try going for ocatves or fifths or something instead of unison and see if that adds the oomph you're looking for. Having a doubled lead and then a doubled octave or some other doubled harmony can lend some power to the song.
