MIDI Drums

I can't drum; I don't have a drumset. So to create drums for the recordings I do at my home I use my Mac's QuickTime Synthesizer. This is my general approach:

1. Sequence MIDI drums in Pro Tools Free
2. Convert to QuickTime MIDI file

Now, my problem with QuickTime MIDI drums is that they sound so... unreal. I know it's a long shot, but is there a (free) program available for the Mac that imports MIDI files and allows me to use my own samples for each of the different drums? Basically, I'd like something that takes my pre-existing drum files and simply replaces the QuickTime Musical Synthesizer's voices.

Since there probably isn't, I was also looking at FruityLoops for the PC. Can anyone tell me more about it, specifically if it can import MIDI and whether it'll sound better than QuickTime's anemic drums?

Thanks.

Fruity Loops is FANTASTIC! Tons of people around here swear by Fruity Loops including myself. I'm not sure about whether or not you'll be able to import your existing files into it, but I am absolutely sure that you can get a better sound from it than QT. All you need is Fruity and an assortment of good drum samples and you're styling.

Yes, you can import standard midi files into Fruity. They have a demo version you can get your hands on I believe. Otherwise, take a look in our links directory www.homerecordingconnection.com/links.php and look at the freeware section. I am sure you will find something there. I am updating the links section day by day, so check back if you dont find anything, but Im sure you will.

Well, I downloaded the Natural Studio Kit. I imported my MIDI file into a new Pro Tools document and started sequencing the drums by hand. It sounds better than the MIDI, but it took four hours of my life! I'm definately gonna look into FruityLoops as soon as I go home this weekend so I can use my Dad's PC...

Thanks for the advice everybody.

Update -- I'm such an idiot. I didn't even think to check whether QuickTime's musical instruments were a Soundfont (they are). I got some free new ones off the net which sound much better than Quicktime's built-in stuff.

Problem solved. Thanks for the help.
