Vista / 1010LT / Sonar 5 Questions

Howdy. My current computer was starting to die so I went out and bought a fancy new Dell with Windows Vista Home Premium. It also came with a Soundblaster x-fi sound card. I have an M-Audio 1010LT that I'd like to keep using (I found the Vista drivers online), but I think I also like to keep the Soundblaster around to run non-recording apps. Does anyone know how to set up Vista so both sound cards work and you choose your sound card based on your application? Is this even possible?

Also, I have a copy of Sonar 5 that I was using on my old machine. I've read online that Sonar 5 and Vista may not be compatible. So it looks like I may have to drop $250 to upgrade. Has anyone gotten Sonar 5 to work with Vista? I found a little bit online of people hacking something together but the info was pretty old.

I'll probably try installing everything tonight or tomorrow to see what I can figure out. I thought I'd check here first though to see if you guys had any ideas.

Thanks.

Sonar 6 was the first to be fully ported to run with Vista. Though you can run Sonar 5 PE in Vista you will have to do so logged in as an administrator. And as well you may be limited to using the MME drivers which are an absolute generic driver and will probably give you horrible latency.

There are no maigc fixes or hacks out there that will allow pre version 6 Sonar to run magically in Vista without trouble.

But that said, it is well worth the shot at trying it to see how much you can do with it logged in as an Admin.

Other then that, I am a Cakewalk user from the very first sequencer program and have been faithfully using it ever since. I can tell you right off that the $250 price tag for the upgrade from V5 is well worth the money indeed. Especially if you are going the Producer Edition route. You will not be disappointed with the upgrade as V 8 is a far cry from v 5 and that is putting it mildly.

Thanks for the tips, Noize. I'm going to load it up and see what happens. Worst case I'll be out $250 and get some cool new stuff. I was just getting to learn version 5 :(

Does anyone else have experience running two sound cards in Vista?

8 isn't a lot different from 5. In fact you can actually set it up to work and look exactly like 5 if that's what you want.

The tools that have been added are fantastic and most make the job a whole lot easier.

As for the sound cars, it should be able to allow you to assign the stock card for windows sounds and or media player audio and the 1010 simply for using with Sonar. That should not be a problem.
