Phase checker - necessary?

Obviously very useful,, but I have 2 questions: 1) how do they work? (the concept) and 2) what might be a good brand, yet inexpensive...Mainly for live & studio applications--checking mike phasing in particular. TIA!

there several uses for a phase checker....most obvious is if you plan on broadcasting on analog FM radio (they still do that right?)....all fm radios have an auto summer for when the signal gets weak (everyone has heard this in their car at one time or another)...or if yer on a clock radio...same thing.

another cool use is to check two mics on one source....very useful with guitar tracks...

also you can use it for monitor placement *i think* by setting up two mics at the listening position and playing a mono signal out the monitors.

i use the one that comes with Wavelab...and really only pull it out once or twice in any given session.
