Looking for good affordable guitar Effect Panel -- help needed

Hello, new to the forum and site. I think this is the right subforum to ask in

I've been playing guitar for about three years now total and I'm looking to expand my horizons.

I'm looking for a good guitar effectprocessor or multieffect or whatever does it. I don't have much experience in this area, so I thought if anyone has any good tips on good brands, products etc. it would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's relevant to mention my gear. I've got a casino and epiphone les paul ultra 2 (currently in the shop for repair) all with stock pickups, a shitty line 6 spider 3 15 watt amp (planning on getting a new one maybe vox VT15 or a pathfinder 10 watt tube amp or both). It seems like a real jungle out there, you cut and cut in the bushes trying to find good info, and the more you find out the more you realize what you don't know.

I'll mostly be working from home, recording etc. I use Cubase, and I've mixed guitar and other sounds some success. I've been able to use it to mix away poor sound quality so it sounds okay but not the same, but I feel real sound can't be faked. I like that pink floyd solo sound, that larger than life overdrive without too much fuzz. But I'm also into soft clean tubes tones and reverb. I could get some effects out of a good combo amp like the Vox VT series but i don't really trust that stuff from prior experience. I'll probably try one out tomorrow at the guitar store and i'll ask around for effectpanels etc, but i've an inkling it would be better if i could set up a good effectpanel + just amp then it would work better and i'd have more room to manuever and create my own sound. I have somewhat of a budget but depending on quality i wouldn't want to go beyond 300-400$ tops. Unless its a really good deal.

So...any help, tips etc would be greatly appreciated! =)

One that I would recommend checking out is the SRB 808 (Effects Pedal Boutique SRB 808). I'm not the best judge for multieffect pedals since I usually used separate devices when playing. I guess the SRB could be considered a well thought out tube screamer but it offers lots of variables. The guy that builds them often has good prices on ebay. Search for a few reviews I think you'll find high marks. But Line 6, offers a lot for a little, so you might want to give them a closer look as well.

There are so many choices, its tough to suggest any 1 solution. The main problem I have is that I have an effects loop on my amp, and so many effects sound so much better in the effects loop versus inline between the guitar and the amp.

So you have a choice to make:
- do you want to put the multi-effects before the amp so that the distortions, overdrives, compressors, EQs, wahs, noise gates and other filter/dynamics effects sound their best?
- or, do you want to put the multi-effects in the effects loop where the flangers, choruses, delays, tremolos, phasers, and other time-based effects sound best?

I ended up going with a multi-effects unit that only has time-based effects in it (TC Electronic G-Sharp) and then I use my Ibanez TS9, Boss NS-2, and Boss CS3 before the amp. The trouble there is all of the tap-dancing I have to do to change tones if I want to change more than 1 parameter at a time. I don't perform in a band, I don't ever play anywhere except in my own basement, so this setup works for me just fine.

But I definitely suggest replacing that Spider amp with something all-tube. Spiders are beginner's amps. It sounds like you're ready to step up a notch, which is why I highly recommend something all-tube.

If you're after the Pink Floyd kind of sound, then a tube amp with a good overdrive pedal, a good delay pedal, and either your amp's built-in reverb or a good reverb pedal would get you there.

Honestly though, if you get many more effects than that, then its more of a novelty. Most of those effects just sit there, not being used most of the time. If you just buy a delay pedal, an overdrive pedal, and a reverb pedal, you can put the OD inline between the guitar and amp, and the delay and reverb in the effects loop. And you'll use all of those pedals each and every time you turn on your amp.

thanks a lot for the responses.

I thpought i could get a cheap all tube with the pathfinder but my dealer told me they weren't tube anymore,

i found out that there's a company called Palomino or something and they make all tube HQ amps for affordable prices, but the amp i was looking for was discontinued and the company doens't have a webpage + my local dealers don't sell them neither do the well anyone in my area. I live in Sweden so from American dealers isn't really an option =( oh well.

I bought the VOX VT15, which uses both tubes and digital and it sounds alright. I'm gonna look more into how to customize my sound with it. I'll have to keep looking i guess, these combo amps work best on their own.

Do they have the Epiphone Valve Jr. there? The head and cabinet version is what I have. IT is modded, but even un-modded it has a killer tone. Its a 5 watt class A single ended tube head and is stellar sounding.

The Boss GT models i think are stellar in terms of sound, ill even go as far as to say they surpass Line 6 in terms of effects (not amp modelling). I dont know how good their software is though so more points to Line 6's gear box which i find very handy and should be even handier on one of their floor units for getting good presets.

I know alot of ppl use the big TC units and the Vox ones, but in my experience their kind of flashy and dont do anything that would justify their price.

If u r switching to a tube amp though... i dont know this is just my opinion but i dont like the sound of multieffects into tube amps since most of them r always "modelling" even when ur not using the amp model section the process for creating the effects is basically modelling as well, i think it kind of defeats the purpose of having a good tube sound if ur guitar signal is being reconstituted digitally like that.
