Mic Distortion Problem

Ok, i thought i knew a lot about home recording... turns out I have a lot to learn. I have been hooking up my mic into my MIC IN. I learned today that this is not a good idea. I have been struggling with a problem for a while: when I record I get this overblown, distorted, amatuer sound when the sound gets too loud. Is there a way to solve this problem without buying a mixer or anything (I already have Cakewalk Music Creator)? I heard there may be a way to hook a MIDI cable up to the mic, is this true? Thanks!

you cannot hook a MIDI cable up to your mic. mics lines are analogue signals, MIDI is digital data.

I'm guessing you're using the typical stock soundcard that came with your computer? if it has 1/8" plugs it was not meant for recording. the only mic you should be plugging into the "MIC IN" on a sound card like that, is a mic designed for computers. not exactly the ideal microphone to be recording music with.

sounds like you're experiencing "clipping" where the signal to overdriven too loud, certainly doens't please the ears huh? a hardware compressor would take care of that.

the proper way to do it would be using a proper mic and mic preamp and sending that signal into your soundcard.

i'm using Shure and Audio Technica mics, a Behringer mixer or M-Audio AudioBuddy preamp, and an M-Audio Delta 44 sound card. Soon I'll be picking up a rackable compressor, just waiting of my tax return.

fill out you gear profile so we know what you have, that way we can better recommend what you need. Be sure to list what soundcard you're using and what kind of mics and other hardware. Also stae your computer's specs, mainly your processor, RAM, and harddrives. Also note your operating system what other software you're running besides Music Creator.
