AKG K240 M vs MKII

Hey there,

I am looking for some good $100 headphones to do some mixing on. I know instead $500 monitors should be the way to go, but I don't have that kind of cash plus my room would still destroy their sound since there's nothing acoustically treated here, and I can't optimally place them.

So, headphones it is. I did some searching and found this topic:

Here Noize recommends the AKG K240 M, but I can only seem to find the MKII version: www.thomann.de/nl/akg_k240_mkii.htm since the M series are discontinued.

Would anyone still recommend these MKII's?

Thanks for reading, greets Rowan.

EDIT: how about these: www.thomann.de/nl/beyerdynamic_dt990pro.htm

I found a pair of AKG K240 M's! Only problem is, they're 600ohms and my stereo amplifier is 16ohms.......

What does that mean, do I have to turn the volume all the way up to get a reasonable signal.. if any?

Thanks for reading.

Hey Stone, between the two the AKG is probably got a bit better freq. response. Probably not a huge difference though. Comfort wise I would guess they might be similar as well with the Beyer's being a bit heavier from what I can tell.

From looking around a little bit it appears the DT990 does have a bit more high end boosted which would not be prime for mixing. Although I've not tried the MKII on the spec's look identical to the M or S model from AKG in the 240 series.

If yo have to mix in headphones then the flatter the better and these are pretty flat without a lot of frequency boosted to make them sound pretty.

Hi there Noize!

It seems that the AKG headphones are indeed the most "honest" ones, I even managed to find the discontinued M version. The guy says he has been having them lying around for 10 years in a closet and they're practically new, and it's a special anniversary edition (which have different emblems or something..). He wants 125 euros (157 USD) for them.

Anyway! I have a 25+ year old stereo amplifier system, the Philips FA564, which has a speaker output rated at 16ohms. I will be using the headphone output on this amp to drive these 600ohms AKG's. Do you think I will run into any problems?

Thanks a bunch, greets Rowan.

EDIT: any experience with these Audio Technica ATH-M50? : www.thomann.de/nl/audio_technica_athm50.htm

As long as you are using a headphone out jack you should be OK. The speaker output rating has no effect on the actual headphone output.

On the ATH-M50, again this is a very good headphone indeed. But it is going to be the same as some of the others. It is more directed at pleasure listening and will have some boosting in the high and low end. Which in the end will give you a false sense of were your mix is really at.

You have been very helpful, as always! I'm going to contact the guy and buy those great AKG K240 M's!

Thank you very much, let the mixing begin..

Just wanted to add I recieved the AKG K240 M headphones today.

What an incredible sound, it sounds so... clear. I almost can't describe it, and I feel ashamed when putting on my Behringer HPM1000 headphones haha. Great!

Cheers.

Indeed, glad your liking them. I know a couple clients who actually went out and bought them to use on home stereo gear. Which I don't here, I have some more expensive Beyerdynamics for that. but they loved the mellow flat tone. Funny thing is they are actually a quieter headphone overall then the home stereo type. No volume boost or hyped tones.

Glad your liking em.
