Help with first recording of melodic death metal(placement, panning,eq etc)

Hi I have ableton live 7LE and am experimenting with recording tunes influenced by bands like skyfire, imperanon, insomnium, dark tranquility.

My problem I have only ever really just played guitar and all this is new to me.

I am assembling clips and scenes of guitar riffs, keyboard etc.

I would be grateful for any help in where to set various instruments in the mix

for guitar,bass,synth drums,vocals,atmospheric effects.

eg i think do you have two guitars panned hard left and right (7 o clock and 5 o clock)

also suggested EQ settings for various instruments and should I use filters,
I think I read you want the highs and lows for the drums, lows for the blasts on the kick and highs for the hats etc,

what about the bass,synth,vocals,guitars.

What about compression

what I want is to be able to put all my clips together as an arrangement do what ever needs to be done then be able to upload them for comments on fine tuning,

hopefully this will allow me to develop a sort of workflow of my own plus it will avoid me uploaidng an awful sounding mess hehe peoples stuff on here is so professional and all the tech terms I am hoping I can suss it all out. it remimds me of when I first used photoshop 10 years ago except 10 x more confusing.

any other good resources for mixing/recording this type of music

My equipment is live 7 LE
bass drum mania and big fish audio drum samples/loops in the styles I want.
A epi Les paul guitar and pocket pod
an m audio oxygen 2 controller and some behrnger ms 16 monitors. im using a G4 Emac 1Ghz 768 ram

ps I have the book making music with live by dave hill

Thanks for your help in advance. best wishes......paul

That's alot of questions. I almost think if you uploaded a rough draft so we could hear, you would get much better advice specific to the song.

There are no real "presets" for anything, it is all mix dependent.

Now having an understanding of what instruments reside where on the frequency range can help alot, and it simply requires some reading.

I can say that doubled (or quad) guitars will add to that "wall of sound" heard so often in metal. At least two tracks of each riff.

Thanks Captain, have not really got anything i could upload yet I keep sketching out riffs etc then starting again, so I am guessing you would assemble all the needed clips first before starting to tweak panning and eq etc.

I will do a search on google about where instrument reside on the frequency range,

it would be useful to have some sort of book eg beginners guide to producing heavy metal or something with a glossary of technical terms, i will check out amazon and ebay.

Thanks for your input on my question anyway I imagine people get sick of newbie posts. with the right resources and this forum hopefully I can come up with a regular workflow. anymore input from other members still greatly appreciated. thanks and best wishes....paul

There are actually some very informative articles in the tips section under "effects and signal processing", at least enough to get a started on comp\eq etc...

But yes, tracking and lining everything out with processing and mixing coming later is pretty standard.

Thanks Captain, wow the tips section is a goldmine I just found an article which was just what I wanted, I have also ordered a book called basic mixing and am looking at ordering , the art of mixing a visual guide which I have in .pdf format but i prefer to have a book in the traditional format as I can read it anywhere. Thanks for your help, I can now go about creating an arrangement knowing I have at least a basic guide/grounding when it comes to mixing it, then with some constructive crticism I can fine tune it. I am so glad I found this forum. thanks again....Paul
