if they are just VSTi's, drop them in the VST folder and restart the program.

Do I just drag the .dll's to the VST folder or do I need to make a sub folder for each new instrument?

Geoff, VST is native now in Sonar. Has been since 6, no wrapper needed at all.

Anyway, yep simply drag em to the folder. You can run the scan from the tools menu as well if needed. But in 6 you should not need to.

The only ones that will need to run an install will be marked as an exe file though so watch for them. Most like that are sampler type though.

Ok, thanks guys.

As for midi instrument composition, do I need any external hardware; other that the audio interface? As in the external midi keyboard...

Nevermind on that last question, I figured out how. I just went to the piano roll view and went from there; after I chose the instrument and etc. The one problem is that I can't get the to playback through my audio interface to my headphones...

Well, you can write the notes in the piano roll, the staff view or use an external keyboard controller to play it in live.

On the listening thing. You need to assign the output of the synth audio track to the headphone output or simply to the output of your audio interface in the track itself.

That's what I thought, but I tried to set it the same way that I could choosing inputs for audio recording and didn't find a way.

Its in the track view or at the bottom of the mixer/console view.

In the track view you simply need to expand the track so you can see all the control's. If you need to grab the bottom of it and drag down. You will see simply; one line marked I and one marked O. The O is your output selection.

In the console view make sure you have the output section switched on and it will be there as well.

OK, I see your not clear on what is what here.

First off the pic is of a midi track. That will not make sound on its own as it is only data and you have its output pointing at the Lexicon midi output port which is probably going nowhere.

You need to go back a few steps.

Have you read any of the tutorials in the manual on using VSTi synths and the like? That will make things much easier then me writing out a full tutorial here.

But the short of it is this.

Open the Synth Rack view. Now choose the synth you want to open and play through.

Tell it to open both the audio output and midi track and the property page.

It will automatically open and audio track and assign it to the proper outputs. It will also open a midi track and point it toward whatever synth you opened.

The problem with what it appears you are doing is you are opening a midi track that is going nowhere.
