I have a MXL 990 mic and a Mic Mate to go into the USB port. I use Audacity to record. I have a hiss and background noise that is so overbearing that I can't even hear the vocals. The vocals are very light and the hiss is very loud. I now I am not doing something right, but I don't know what to check. My mic that comes on the laptop was so much better than this Mic setup. Pleas help me figure out what I am doing wrong. Thanks so much.

Is your laptop running off the battery power, or is it plugged in? Try plugging it in and removing the battery, if you haven't yet.

I haven't tried that yet. I didn't know about that maybe having an effect on it. Thanks. I will try it.

Disabling wireless if you have it might be something to try also. It tends to mess with my USB recording interface on my laptop.

Another issue I found from a mic mate user, try a different usb port (side\front) as devices may be sharing the back USB hub such as your trackpad, camera, keyboard etc...
