Cubase sx3 started recording crackles!

I've used Cubase sx3 for a couple of years on my laptop with no problems. Now suddenly it has started recording crackles in my audio.

I know its recording them as when I zoom in on the wave I can see slight 'gaps' where it seems to have momentarily glitched or stopped then re-started recording. Also I hear more crackles on playback (that cant be seen on the audio wave). It makes it sound a bit like an old record!

Don't think I've changed any settings. I use an AMD Athlon 64, 3400+, 793Mhz, 512MB RAM plus a Seagate external hard drive via USB. I record via an Edirol UA25 (usb) at a sample rate of 44.1. As I say it has worked a treat until recently.

Anyone know how I can eliminate this problem? Ta.

Well I'll ask a question first off.

Although with the amount of RAM you have that is close to the bare minimum to run SX3, not matter what the website says is a minimum. Ram is the most important thing for the audio to run properly in the newer DAW's. That and a good audio interface.

Which brings me to my question. What are you using for an audio interface/sound card?

Also, by chance are you running more tracks now then you had in the past, and the crackles appeared after doing that?

The external drive is perfect as well. Many never think of that, it takes the load off the OS drive which is also running the recording app.

Thanks for the reply!

I've disabled my laptop's sound card as I use the Edirol UA25 as sound and interface.

Dont think I'm using more tracks per song than I used to but I have quite a few songs now stored on my Seagate ext drive. Could it be that with all that audio the RAM is finding it harder to process new audio? Or does the computer just ignore other saved material?

I've now upped the RAM to 1GB and it does seem a lot better - not perfect but better.

Maybe if I make backup discs of all the old material and delete from the ext drive the processor will find it easier to access and record audio?!

What are your thoughts?

Cheers!

No, the stored files shouldn't really have anything to do with it as they are not even being searched for data.

Adding the ram helped, which I thought it might.

To be honest SX3 is a pretty processor and ram hog. Sonar used to be the that way as well until they released 8. Now they have cut the system usage to less then half of what version 7 was. I am thinking Cubase is going to follow pretty soon with a release that will be less system heavy.

But if you are using many pluggin's as well that can add up quickly.

I think to be honest I would say the ram is the solution here as your processor is plenty fast.

In Sonar 7 PE I ran 2 gigs of ram with about the same speed processor as you are using and I could run out of resources with that.

Typical issues: Clocking (biggest), "dirty" disk (defrag, get rid of old temp files, etc.), anti-virus running in background, too many services in general.
