I purchased cubase LE4 with a tascam us-1641 interface yesterday. Other than that I have no idea about anything. I installed cubase on my computer and now have no idea what to do. I went through the manual a couple times but even that could not help me. Alls I know is I want to record some stuff but have no idea how to do it. I need someone to explain this to me as if I was 7 years old and have no clue what any of this recording jargain means. The microphone is plugged into the interface. Now what? Remember, I do not know what any of this recording lingo means. Bus, inputs, outputs.... who knows. I just wanna record. What do I do?

I've read the manual and the quick start guide for the 1641 and it is pretty well laid out, for even a 7 year old.

But I digress, you'll want to start out with getting the driver's installed for the unit. You'll also want to update the firmware as I'm pretty sure even if you purchased it new it will still have the old firmware installed.

You can find that all on this page.
www.tascam.com/products/us-1641;9,15,1056,19.html

Along with the full manual's I referred to above. They are pretty complete and can guide even a newbe through getting it up and running, all the way out to running full recording sessions and mulitple inputs.

I'm kind of curious though. If you simply want to record and are just starting out. Why on earth would you purchase a $400 interface without knowing a thing about it or how to use it?

Not trying to be rude here, just wondering why as I see this so often now.

But as i stated, get the drivers installed so that Windows and Cubase recognize the unit and update the frimware and then is you still need guidance we will be here for ya.

Believe it or not you're giving me too much credit. I don't even know what a driver is. How do I install them? I bought the expensive equipment because I am retired and am looking for a hobby to pass the time. My kids all play music and thought this purchase would be a nice gift/investment for everybody to enjoy. I installed the program... now what? Thanks.

Well that is the best reason then indeed. I admire you for that one for sure.

As for installing the drivers and firmware. Simply download the current drivers and the current firmware for your version of Windows.

You'll want to get the v. 1.02 release of both the drivers and the firmware.

Then you will need to unzip them. Windows in its current form should have an unzip utility in Explorer. Simply double click the file and it should ask you were you would lie to extract it to. Extract it to the desktop. Then go to the extracted file and doulbe click it.

I will warn you though that you should disconnect the 1641 USB cable first so that the driver install does not corrupt. After the install completes, then plug the 1641 in and follow the windows prompts. If it warns you that the software is not windows approved simply click ignore. That is because Microsoft charges mfg. for each instance of a install or driver update to be verified, thus costing the end user in the end. so they many don't bother any longer.

Then after the drivers are installed and the device is recognized by windows you can proceed just about the same way to update the frimware. But this time you will leave the 1641's USB cable plugged in as it will now use that to transfer the firmware update data.
