i have a toshiba lapop and all the dvd players that it came with suck! the quality is horrible and the frame size is small and the bigger i set it, the worse the quality gets. i want to download a new dvd player software that's good, is free, and doesn't have any viruses. thanks to all who anwsered.

You can try the VLC player.

It's a good open source player, but it has issues with some codecs. When you install it, make it the default player for DVD. You will probably have to tell all of your other players to ignore DVDs by going into their settings and unchecking boxes that associate them with DVD.

It should be noted most of the above-spammed links are legitimate software, most are not "freeware", they are "free to try".

I should delete the post for spamming, but it is real software that some may find useful, and it was at least topical, not just randomly spammed, so I'll leave it.

What's wrong with plain old Windows Media Player? Any DVD I watch on my laptop is viewed via WMP. Framerate, picture quality, and full-screen are
all perfect. No problems whatsoever.

Also, a note to Mr. Spammy Pants above, the original poster wanted software to VIEW DVDs, not copy them, convert to AVI, or any of that other crap you posted about.

I've had encryption problems with WiMP ...but it's been a year... VLC 'just works' ... :)

I should also mention that 'I think' all of those spammed packages are license violators of ffmpeg.

ffmpeg is a nice and powerful little utility but just does the conversion....but I haven't run into anything it doesn't handle.

I have used ffmpeg via .net and php web based interfaces and it's been awesomely reliable and handy. I agree, it's done everything I have needed it to do (which hasn't been a lot, honestly). It's nice to be able to take an uploaded video and whip it out as an FLV for online playback...I assume that is some of the basis that runs YouTube.

If those above spams are violators, I'll pull them down ASAP, that said, the apps in and of themselves look useful for some, so I have kept them up.

I use WiMP as well as Nero Showtime and WinDVD 4. All work splendidly for me.
