Recording simultaneously - mixer question

Hi there,

Hello! I'm hoping someone can guide me down the right path: I need to record my bassist and guitarist simultaneously onto separate tracks in Cool Edit Pro. I'm using an old Peavey (1980's) mixing board with 12 XLR inputs. I have the amplifiers mic'ed and going to separate XLR inputs on the mixing board. I'm then going RCA on the mixing board to 1/8" input in back of computer. Any advice?

I'm assuming your sound card is the one that came with the computer...It's probably stereo then. If you pan the bass channel on the mixer hard left and the guitar hard right they will go on two two separate tracks in Cool Edit Pro, assuming you have the two tracks armed and configured as such. (I'm no longer a CEP user, so I can't remember the steps for doing this, but I do remember that it was fairly intuitive. Just create two new tracks and set one to receive input from the left channel and the other to receive input from the right channel.)

Welcome to HRC!

That's not gonna work. You'll need 2 rca jacks on one end, and a stereo 1/8" jack on the other end. This will keep the signals on their own piece of copper, and shooting to the computer.

something like this:

Not sure what gender you'll need, but gender-benders are easy to come by.

the rest of what jim said makes sense. Pan 1 signal hard left, the other hard right. make 2 mono tracks in CEP, tell one track to listen to input L, and the other track to listen to input R. Arm them both for recording, press record, and play.

Hi guys,

Thanks much for the informative response! Another quick question - is there any additional gear that I need in order to record guitar/bass simultaneously whereby each track is recorded in stereo?

Unless you are using stereo effects on the instruments, there is no need to record them in stereo, however, if you want to, you'd need a sound card with 4 inputs; left and right for each.

That being said, realize that recording them in mono, and mixing them with effects and panning, makes the mix stereo, even thought he recordings are mono.
