i'm looking into the ToneWorks Pandora PXR4 4-Track Digital Recording Studio , for when i go out on the road again in a few weeks . I'm limited to space and i don't really want to go back to using tapes with with a cheap 4 track , but i don't want to break the bank because i have a good set up at home for recording , i just want something portable . the price on the Pandora looks nice , but so does the Fostex new digital recorder , any ideas or info .

Mar 11, 2003 10:53 am Wish I could help Geoff. Sometimes I use a 1604 mixer with a minidisk. Obviously the limit is two tracks. Either get a great mix on the spot or grab a simple stereo recording. When I can haul around my equipment I use an Alesis HD24. Great for recording individual tracks for mix down later in the computer. For myself, I am unwilling to purchase a recording / mixing unit as it does a poor job of what I can do well on the computer. Too expensive to have both options available. A laptop is getting to be a reasonably price alternative if you have either firewire or USB A/D or soundcard capabilities. Even a decent used laptop will enough horsepower to use a good quality but simple recording software to get the recorded tracks home.
Good Luck!

Mar 11, 2003 11:33 pm Geoff, I do believe the Fostex has a few less limitations then the ToneWorks unit, but dont qoute me. I also believe it stores a bit more music over the pandora. I have also heard that the pandora was a bit fragile, if that is anything to add to the decision. The road can be an abusive place as we all know. I used to run a fostex 8 track cassette for a portable unit and it worked great and took a beating and kept running. But I cant say as I have heard much more then the Fostex has what appear to be a bit better specs.
