I have never played with a Squire Jazz, but I have used a Fender Jazz a few times and they are wonderful instruments. I buddy of mine has a matched set of Jazz basses, one fretted and and one fretless....Oooooo, and they are sweet.

I absolutely hate the Precision Basses tho.

What Chevrolet is to GM, Squire is to Fender...

No Commercial Appeal.

tangent time...my girlfriend bought me a "fender" guitar with Lou Reed's signiture on it for a butt load of money (ya, she's the greatest). but i think she spent more money than necessary because she thought it was a fender, but it was really a Silvertone (about a $80 guitar) that looked like a fender. i hate the trickery, but love the signiture.

What is a Precision Bass?

I use a Fender Squire and the action is good, saying that, It's the only bass I've ever played and I only paid £30,

Hang on...mine says 'Precision Bass' along the top.

Pretty much the pick up arrangement is the only difference. It's my observation that the Jazz having two pick arrays allows for a lot better tone adjustement. The Percision is liked my many who slap however for the finger room. And yes Squire is the lower end of the Fender models. If I remember correctly it is made by Samic, don't quote that. With all of that said; the whole Fender thing hits me like Hardley Davison. A lot more name than product. Not to say Fender doesn't make a good bass, but in my opinion not nearly the best sounding. Very good crowd pleasers however. Everyone knows the name!

Walt, may not be the best sounding, but sound isnt everything when looking for a guitar, id rather a guitar i find comfortable with mediocre sound than some baseball bat that sounds great. For me, the tone comes primarily from the amp. Fenders have a decent sound, are tough and will last on the road, are generally lightweight (depending on model), and for the most part: have necks that i find comfortable, with an exception of some models. In my opinion Les pauls are too heavy, uncomfortable, have a sound that may be better than a fender, but for the price and playablility, you really cant go wrong with a fender. Just an opinion though

Don't know about Fender basses but I do know I HATE Fender strats, the design and feel is terrible. I could never get a descent muted strum, I like a bridge to rest on to.

The precision bass also has a little wider neck at the top than the jazz bass. I like the Ibanez basses because of their size a weight, except that the action on mine changes from season to season... Lousy New England!

The thing with basses is that most non-bass-players consider them all to have basically the same sound. This is very far from true. I have a very nice fender jazz bass which I loved when I bought, but doesn't have even remotely the sound I'm looking for now. So, in order to get that sound, I have to play a lot of games with how I record it. It sounds great for what it was meant for. It's just not "fat" enough for my liking. If I had a bass that was built to sound the way I want, I wouldn't have to work as hard to get it there. Just a matter of "the right instrument for the job."

Flame, I think you'll be quite happy with your Fender. I've never had a lick of trouble with mine and they do play pretty nice. And for 100 quid, it's pretty hard to go wrong!

I will agree, different needs for different folks. Weight is not as critical for me as I sit when I perform. I will also agree that the best insrument is the one that "fits" well in all respects. I love my music man. Fits my hands, ears, eyes. The longer I have it the more I love it, as well,.... we have become close and I know what she will do. Might just help a little that I practice on that bass a lot! My Warwic is a nice rock bass, but I really don't play much rock. Besides it is neck heavy and that is a pain.

the necks nice and thin...and although the sound isnt as great as a lot of basses ive heard/played, its easy to play for a non-bassist like myself and has a nice narrow neck

well chuffed i am!

OK, I just dont wanna feel left out. I had a Fender Jazz for awhile and liked it alot. But for the studio, I needed something a bit more comfortable and with a bit more adjustability. I found this Jackson Profesional series JPB 7. The thing is very easy to play either sitting or standing, I prefer the sitting thing. And it has a wide array of tones, and for some odd reason, it is twice as loud as my Jazz was. This thing has such a heavy resonance you could probably mic it. Very nice neck, thin and flat. I believe it was from soem of their custom limited series but not sure. And the best part is it is this ungoddly purple colour that matches the Aurelex foam on the studio walls.

Actually, I have 2 of them. Hooked external USB. I also have an old school version of the Jazz drive called a Sparq drive, they had 1gig removable cartridges. I have about 20 of em, cartirdges that is. I need to copy them over to another HD, as they dont make the sucker anymore and I have alot of good stuff archived on them. The funny thing is its an old parrelell hook up. I am afriad it might take days to transfer all the data.
