I be doing a Metallica (Master of Puppets) cover which i have almost finished, it just needs vox and couple lead breaks.

anyway, i did a mixdown to see how the overall mix is going on a home stereo.

Im finding that its all good so far except, its kinda jaggedy and im looking to get it smoother.
If you have a listen in my profile you can hear what i mean.

all i have done is a mixdown at the point its at, i havent done any mastering as yet and i havent eq'd the overall mix, will i be able to fix this in mastering?
opinions would be great.
Cheers Deon.

Make sure there are no spaces or weird mark ups in it. That will toss a clinker in it sometimes.

ive tried some other songs that arent as long and they seem to be going on fine. i think 5.12mb is the biggest.

the metallica song is 8.35 mb and it wont go on. is it possible its too big?
or maybe there is some other song of mine still on here somewhere im unaware of and its stopping me.

I don't think size should matter...at least that's what my wife says...but still...

Seriously though, size could affect it depending on your connection speed and such.

Eventually I have to rework this uploader to pre-pend each file name with the database record number to make DAMN SURE each file name is unique, I just haven't got around to it yet...but hey, winter is coming, that's my usual development time...

ok, i didnt think size mattered either, at least that's what my missus says.

until now, now im not so sure. Bloody woman!
i've tired so many different names its not funny.
im going to do another mixdown and see if it might be that.
it a fairly long thread so far considering its a bit of a fizzle.

Well, it has been determined that the "name" isn't actually the issue, as lots of people have changed names and it's done nothing different...but the code only compares the name against any existing file in the music directory, so I am in somewhat of a pickle in trying to figger out whats wrong.

mmm, well i got it to work, i did another mixdown and while i was there i figured out that the master fader was up as loud as it could go! i dunno how.

anyway, it seems that most of the jaggedness has gone now i dropped the level....funny that.
still though, may as well have a listen and tell me what you think.
im not sure i have the routing correct for parallel compression and verb but it seems not too bad.

Needs re-eq'd. Metallica in the early years didnt have much of a bass presence in their stuff. Or mids for that matter. I personally like the sound of the Back album and Load and Re-load as far as eq goes. The playing is great. Im listening on my Klipsch pc speakers (they kick ***) and it sounds like the everything, bass, mids, highs were turned down.

BM is right Deon. It sounds kinda muffled and squeezed. There is a lot more present in this song if you give it a chance to shine! Oh, and give the drums a boost, please. The playing is fantastic though.

cheers for the input guys. yeah it does sound a bit squashie though i havent really done much eqing yet.

i did a quick mixdown as it was, just to see how it was coming along annd noticed it was really peaky. but its all sorted now so i guess i can get on wid de vox and leads on the weekend and then post it.
Then you can really rip into it. Ha Ha Ha.

Playing wise its great. I get the eq of each track where I want it. Then I use an master eq on the rendered track if needed. Best to get the sound you need at the tracking stage, then to rely on an outboard or plugin eq to fix the final stereo track. The playing is killer. I was wore out listening. My son always wanted me to do that as a cover with him. But its way to fast for my skills.

i know what you mean, the muting/picking is all downhand! it just doesnt sound right any other way. good ol James Hetfield, gotta love him.

dunno if ya can hear it atm, but i actually put in some of my own litle bits and pieces, at the start i put in some triplets in a couple spots, and some harmonies in the 3rd chorus, im pretty sure they arent ledgable atm,i havent even routed those bits to anything yet, they are just turned right down.
glad ya like it anyway.

Yup, James is a rythm\vocalist beast for sure. Alot of talent in those hands.

And haha, I was wondering about the triplets on the intro :) They sound good. I did pick them out as Metallica was my lifeblood at age 13-17.

Yep, I think the guitar got crushed pretty good. The drums and stuff are in the back, but as you said it isn't really mixed yet as well. I would try and get a little more of the meat of the guitar into the sound as well. It is very midrange heavy right now.

last night i peeled back the mids on guitar. man now its meaty, almost pot roast meaty, which is...quite meaty.

i thinks that's why the drums sounded back in the mix, the ol mids from the axe were smearing everything.
not to mention i had certain bass frequencies sqaushed along with the very little top end
i think i ended up picking a preset and just left it at that originaly, so the result,
i got out the ol 30 band eq and gave the guitars a serving.

i ended up deleting the whole thing coz it was ******* me to tears, but i found an old mixdown about 2 weeks ago of it so im mucking around with the vox on it now.

will post it soon, just gotta get my guitarsist to do the leads.

i muffed up the mix and am stuck with the mixdown i have, so im trying to blend the vox but its a bit hard, i guess i will have to mix the vox in comparison to the rest of it or they wont blend proplerly.
