I am somewhat of a newbie with DAW but coming along nicely. PLEAASE HELP. I am using older synths (Roland jd 800, korg x3) roland for controller. Have midi out from Roland into mbox midi in. I set up an aux. for monitoring purposes, set up and arm a midi track, have audio left n right from Roland into mbox audio ins. when i tap on roland keys, I CAN HEAR ROLAND SOUNDS THROUGH AUX (and audio) TRACK, MIDI TRACK IS REGISTERING AND SHOWING DATA, AND I CAN HEAR EVERYTHING FINE. HERE'S THE PROBLEM. WHEN I PLAYBACK the AUDIO TRACK, I CAN'T HEAR THE EDITED MIDI DATA, (I.E. QUANTIZED) JUST THE ORIGINAL unedited RECORDING. i know its something elemantary, pardon my wetness behind the ears. thank you.

Well two things. The midi data you are editing needs to be sent back out via another midi cable from the midi out on the mbox to the Roland for it to actually playback the edited data. Then you can record that audio playing back to the audio t racks of your DAW.

ok thanx for the reply.I'll hook up the other midi out to roland in, i guess i should have transmit channel from roland set to same channel as midi track input? It's just that i have two types of transmit channels on the roland. One is set in the basic midi parameters-. i.e. local on/off, program change tx settings, controllers etc. then it has a separate multi set up where it is "6 part multitimbral for sequencing applications" where i can set a different channel for 6 different parts. do you know which transmit channel I should use? SORRY ! I just dont have the manual for roland jd 800 i bought it used on e-bay.

This link will take you to the official US site with all the Roland manuals in PDF. You will have to create a profile first to be able to log in.

Well you can really use any channel you wish for anything. Although channel 10 is usually reserved for drums and percussion. But percussion can be used on other channels.

And honestly the channel 10 designation is mainly applied to general midi sequences for public use. Personal studio sequences can be anything you want.

I usually set the input channel of the DAW to omni unless I am using 2 controller's at once. Remember to specify a midi output channel as well for the track to aim it back to the Roland for it to playback.

But yes, the manuals are now pretty much all up on the Roland site in pdf form and the JD-800 really does have some deep stuff you can do but the manual is an absolute must to get there.

thanx again. still no luck on edited midi data play back. I can SEE the edited notes change after quantization, but cannot hear them. I have midi input to "all". I must be doing something wrong in midi studio setup in pro tools. I have all 16 In channels and all 16 out channels highlighted for jd 800. I dont know. All soft ware synths come in on an aux. but I cant find my hard synths in the input list for aux tracks. guess it doesn't work that way. any input is helpful THANX!!!

You simply go here. backstage.rolandus.com/login.php

Sign up and then the manuals section will be available to you.

ON sending the midi out of PT. I'll be honest. I hate PT utilization of midi. It is buried so deep in crap it isn't even funny.

But on that note, you need to assign the midi output of the track to the port that is going to the midi interface which is in turn connected to the Roland unit.

Maybe they took it down. It used to be there.

Don't despair, I have an FTP link in the UK. This one will take you directly to the (long) list with manuals. The Roland JD-800 is on there too and is available. (Just downloaded it.)

Google is man's best friend. ;-)

I'm looking right at it. Did you go to the Roland US Backstage link I posted above??

You need to go there in order to get at all the manuals now.

If you still can't get at it let me know and I'll download it and put it up for you to get on my site.
