Fast Track Pro recording mic volume too low - PLEASE HELP

I have Windows XP (with Media Centre OS .... I know, what was I thinking) and I have recently bought an m-audio Fast Track Pro. Problem is that even with correct drivers installed, the GAIN right up, phantom power on, and PAD off, I have to scream into the mic (RODE NT-1A) to get even the faintest signal on my software (sony ACiD music studio and Cubase LE)

I have heard a rumour that m-audio does not work well with media centre so my question is:

- is my problem media centre OS or is it with Fast track pro (which seems to have a lot of driver issues from what I can gather)

Any advice would be appreciated as I don't want to spend a lot more money on a new computer if that is not my problem.

Does your mic take Phantom Power? And if yes, is it on?

Yes. phantom power is on, gain is right up and PAD is off. There does not appear to be any other way to increase the volume to my PC

A couple simple things to check.

Is the Line/Mic switch in for using the mic?

Do you have the output level up?

Are you trying to use an XLR to 1/4" cable?

Thanks so much for your reply.

The inst/line button is out (INST) which the manual says is the correct setting for a mic. Strangely though, it doesn't matter whether that button is in or out, I get the same recording level

I have tried playing with the output levels but that doesn't seem to affect the signal strength in my recording programs

I'm not sure what the cable is but I bought it from a very reputable music store with the microphone and the interface and the guy who seemed to know what he was talking about said it was a good one.

There should have been a software control panel that installed with the driver's. Are the input levels up on those slider's? As well are the track levels up in your recording software.

This is usually a very simple problem to solve and is limited to only a few variable's so I'm at a loss if the cable and everything else is up to snuff.

It is possible that the unit might be bad or have a bad channel. Have you tried both channel's to see if they do the same thing?

I'm having the same problem, and am ready to take the thing back to the store (just bought the fast track ultra, which shares the same problems as their other models, apparently). I can't get enough mic gain no matter what settings I use. I've read reviews/opinions from other owners of this line that mention the same issue.
