Old Mics

I had a few questions about old ("vintage") mics:

- i've been reading up a bit and people seem to think that older AKG and ElectroVoice mics are quality pieces of equipment that can be had for reasonable prices. specifically, the AKG D1000e, and EV 664,666,635, etc. Does anyone have any input, positive or negative, regarding these mics, or any recommendations for other mics of similar style and quality? also, i have no idea what years these mics were manufactured...any idea?

- more generally, i've been interested in getting a couple '60s era mics on the cheap and trying them out compared to all the newer mics i have. not really looking for any one specific sound, just something different. does anyone have any recommendations for good mics from this era that can be had for cheap (under $150)?

thanks!

- Matt

Most mics from that era in fact are the most expensive ones in the market, i've never heard of a vintage or even legendary 60's mic sold under 150dlls (try adding another zero), but there are some of them at reasonable price out there, reasonable meaning 400-800 dlls. Regarding the mics you mentioned, i've worked with some of them like the D1000 and the 635, and they sound very good

i understand that vintage things are generally at a premium, but to clarify, i'm not looking for a legendary or even great old mic, just one that is in working condition, and was wondering about any particular brands or models that might be easy to get a hold of.

Well I can tell you some brands to look for. But I doubt that you will ever find one for around $150.

One of the most sot after brands for the era, is the RCA 44. One can expect to pay around $3000 to $10,000 for one depending upon condition.

Another is an Neumann 47 or 87. Expect to pay around the same.

EV has many models around that time. The RE20 or PL27 are even still in production. At a better price then the Neumann or RCA.

If you can find a RCA ribbon mic for cheaper. Buy it! Even if it is not working, you can have it fixed for a fraction of the price.

I have an EV635, as well as two 611s . They can be found relatively cheap out there .(between $100-$200 ea.)

I use the 635 extensively for micing our kick drum, which I think it does an excellent job at . The 611s we use to mic guitar/bass cabs, as well as on the toms of our kit . They're ok for this... a bit dull, but I like 'em . You always see these puppies in courtrooms... as they're used at the witness stands all the time .
