CAN'T RECORD AUDIO

Desparately need help. I have an old school set-up that usually works perfectly until yesterday. I have a Behringer Eurorack MX 1804X mixer, connected to a PC running Window XP. I'm running Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, which usually works perfectly connected to a Roland XP 30. Sound card is Creative Sound Blaster PC1512. Everything was working fine, but all of a sudden I CAN NOT RECORD AUDIO ONLY and I don't get any levels on the meter in Cakewalk's console View for audio. Midi records fine in multiple tracks. In the Windows MS mixer I have already tried selecting input or microphone and still no audio levels in console view. I checked to see if anything was muted anywhere and nothing is. I've tried all the troubleshooting I know. I would greatly appreciate any help. I have a recording session that I desparately need to lay down vocals for ASAP. Thanks.

Have you installed any new software or hardware? That is usually the culprit in a sudden change to a system that was working fine.

The other thing to look at, is the card playing back from any sources at all? Or is it simply not recording into PA 9?

Does the Windows Device Manager show any problems with the sound card? Everything plugged in correctly? Do you still have sound when playing something?

Cables?

I would troubleshoot from start to finish, and make sure you have good signal at each stage of the chain.

Mic outputting?

Mixer receiving on channel? (this is a cable area)

Mixer outputting?

PC Hardware receiving? (this is a cable area)

PC interface seeing signal ( maybe a control panel, or windows applet)

Then upstream from there similarly.

Welcome to the HRC, hope it gets cleared up toot-sweet.

My sound card records midi from my Roland XP through a Behringer mixer perfectly in Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.

Tapping the mic registers levels on the Behringer mixer perfectly.

When I play the Roland it registers levels on and records perfectly through the Behringer mixer.

Windows' Device Manager says the sound card is working perfectly.

The only problem is getting Cakewalk's console View to show levels when I try to record audio. I can't record any audio. Even when I put the console view slider all the way up or volume on Behringer all the way up

I don't know if there's a switch or something in Cakewalk that I need to click.

I do know that I'm suppose to click "Line In" in the Windows MS mixer, but when I do that I get absolutely nothing (levels) in console view. But when I click microphone instead, a tiny little bit of level registers in Console View, but way to small of a level to actually record anything. It only goes to about 54 at the very bottom. I think it's just sound card noise.

I used to have a friend do all my midi/computer hook ups who is now very, yery sick, so maybe that's my problem. I'm not good at this so this is a pre-school explanation" I have the parallel port plugged into the sound card, coming from the Behringer's left and right "main out". Next to parallel port are four little quarter inch colored holes; Black, green, red, blue. Into the Black hole I have a black quarter inch plug that's split off from the parallel port, I put into the black sound card hole. Then into the green hole green hole I have plugged a set of computer speaker (FYI: These speakers are just for computer. I have studio monitor for recording.)

Nothing is muted anywhere. I greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

in cakewalk try Audio > options and devices

is your soundblaster in the list of avaliable cards to use?

how exactly are you recording midi? does your soundcard have midi i/o?

In Control Panel under Sound And Audio Devices, The Creative SB PC1512 sound card. When I click the Audio tab, this sound card is listed for Sound Playback (Creative SB PC1512 Wave Device), for Sound Recording (Creative SB PC1512 Wave Device)and for Midi Music Playback (A: SB: PC1512 Midi Synth).

I realized that that when I tap the mic, I hear it on my studio monitors, but not through my computer speakers.

what are your monitors plugged into? i'd assume the SB....and what do you have your computer speakers plugged into?

ya gotta make sure cakewalk is using your SB card, check audio options inside cakewalk.

also in order to record midi, you have to be plugging midi cables into something, what are you pluggin' your keyboard's midi outs into?

I am guessing you have the monitor's plugged into the mixer and that you do not have a line output from the SB card going back to the mixer. Also, if you still have the PC speaker's plugged into maybe an stock sound card and have the SB chosen for playback you will not hear anything from the PC speaker's.

Can you describe your exact signal chain for us?

The monitors are hooked into the mixer's main output. I'm thinking maybe the other end of that cable is perhaps plugged into the wrong socket in the back of computer. Is there a particular color socket I need to plug it into? My sound card has the Joysick (which is plugged in), then it has a black, green, red and blue holes. Also, I noticed I don't hear any keyboard or mic output to computer speakers, which I have plugged into green whole. However, computer speakers will play CDs perfectly. Thanks for your help. Studio monitors have good output on keyboard and mic.

Thanks guys, but I ended up resolving the problem today and now I am back in business.

As I suspected, it was an improper connection problem into the computer. Once again, thanks. Good day.
