Fostex FD-4 input problem.. any suggestions?

Hi
I've picked up a Fostex Fd-4 digital 4-track recorder (with a ZIP drive! how 1998!)
I'm having difficulty with noise/distortion when recording: basically if I run an electric or electric-acoustic guitar into the inputs I get large amounts of distortion at even low volume levels. The input LEDs barely register the instruments signal and if I increase the input volume I get huge fuzztones. I've tried running through a passive DI into the XLR inputs and same problem. Toggling between the Hi/Mid/Low impedance switches on the balanced inputs gives me very little at high and mid and the aforementioned distortion at Low. Even the Microphone is distorting when I attempt to use it to record 'live'. I've been back and forth through the manual (which isn't very helpful) and can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Anybody with any ideas/suggestions/advice?

Thanks

It could be a couple of different things.

Is the channel gain turned up to high, not the slider but the knob at the top?

Also, that unit has built in effect's I do believe. Are any of them turned on? Such as distortion or something that might over drive the inputs.
