Total recording noob looking for advice on a setup

I'm an individual (no band) who plays guitar, bass, and sings. I'm looking to learn how to use Toontrack EZDrummer DFH as well as learn how to record my own music that I write. I will possibly be using some kind of digital direct box like a Line6 POD for directly recording my guitar and bass tracks. I would like to have a vague idea on the optimum setup for my needs, as I would like to be able to have recording quality better than demos but I don't need a huge setup or excessive cost. Also, ease of use is a bonus. If anybody has any advice, it would be much appreciated as it just seems like there are so many options out there and I have no idea where to start.

Thanks for those links, they are very helpful as far as trying to understand the basics.

A question- Is it better to have an entire computer dedicated to the task of recording rather than incorporating all I would need to record onto my personal everyday laptop?

Part of the reason I ask is that I have an opportunity to pick up a Digi001/PowerMac G4 setup and I'm wondering if it would be a good fit for my needs.

If your looking at Line 6 I would suggest the Toneport UX-2 then for what you are going to do. It does guitar, bass and vocals as well. I've been using one for a couple of years now along with a fully loaded POD xt and really like the UX-2 for sure.
