Gear list:

PreSonus FireStudio - Clock source also connected via the firewire to the computer.

DigimaxFS - Connected to the FireStudio via ADAT Lightpipe and a BNC connection.

Now that I've hooked the DMFS up and synced it and all, there is a rather loud hiss coming from the left channel only. And when I change the sample rate, the higher it is, the louder the hiss gets. I turn the DMFS off and it goes away. But, the odd thing is it's just the left channel.

I'm assuming it has to be a sync issue. But, what can I do about it?

OK I am not a 100% sure on this. I do know that some lightpipe signals carry a sync signal with them.

It sounds as if the left side has that sync signal coming down on it.

So in combination with the BNC, your getting a conflicting time.

This could cause the noise that you are hearing.

Yeah. I think your darn close...

I've been doing a ton of research on it and it seems this is a bit of a common issue with this particular set up.

Some have fixed this issue with a newer chipset in the firewire card. And since I'm on a laptop right now, I have to go 4 pin to 6 pin. That also seems to be an issue.

When my new computer gets here tomorrow or Tues, I'm hoping that with the upscale FW card I put in it, it will be fixed. I not, it doesn't seem to be changing the sound quality any on input so, I just back down my monitor level and add the volume back with the FS main out. (The hiss doesn't adjust with the volume, it's on the noise floor, I guess is what you call it.) Even in doing that, it seems my D/A seems to have a little more tone to it or something. Since I have to crank the Main on the FS out, everything seems a little crisper. Haha.

Ya, I agree with Rob. I've never combined signals like that at all because of timing conflicts. You really only need one timing source so loosing the BNC might help out there.

But ya, the card doing a 4 pin to 6 pin when it actually requires a 6 pin connection can be another major issue. I know Presonus does not play nice without the 6 pin true connection.

Well, see with that SMUX send, I can't shut it off. And I know that a word clock sync is better than the ADAT one... So, I just attenuated my monitors so I wouldn't hear it.

I've read that it is in the D-A part so, it won't effect my recordings if I still have it with my new PC.
