I've identified the Mackie Problem

Greetings friends,
I posted a topic about a month ago on how my Mackie 1604 vlz pro was making a crackling sound every once and a while. It turns out that it was the "Right tape output" where you would hook up an RCA cable to go to a stereo or some kind of monitoring or mixdown device etc. Do any of you know how one would go about fixing this. I realize it could be anywhere from a quick alcohol swab wipe to having to take it into a shop and pay close to half of what it would cost to just buy a new one. But please, I want to be enlightened. All comments are welcome. Thank you for your time.

Have you tried a new set of cables yet? That can sometimes be the culprit. Otherwise, yes other then cleaning, the only other option is to open the board up and look for a broken or loose wire or solder joint.

One very vague opinion. Usually RCA jacks themselves do not develop that type of problem. TR and TRS jacks do because of the way they physicaly plug in and out. Probablilty states that it would be in the circuitry itself. One piece of advice. If you pop the top to try to fix it, pay real close attention to how every wire is laid and positioned. Even if the routing inside looks wierd, be carefull to ensure everything goes back together EXACTLY as it was. Wire routing, little pieces of tie down, or metalic shields. Everything is positioned as it is to avoid noise.

Good Luck!

Yes indeed, good point Walt. I did neglect to say that if you opwn the board, be prepared for a very tightly packed piece of gear. And like he said, be carefull to put it all back were it came from, because it is ther for a reason.
