So I have been itching to get one of the Onyx setups from Mackie for awhile.

I just picked up the Onyx 1640 with the firewire card for $1000!!! I used my ebay mastercard with no interest until 2009 and my band is going to pay for half of it since I do all our recordings, hooray!!!

The firewire card alone sells for $4-500 and the mixer around $1200 so I got a smoking deal. I now have 16 onyx mic pre's at my disposal and can finally record a whole band all at once. With my laptop I can do it up at live shows also, I am soooooo stoked!!!!

Awesome! 16 tracks will be a blessing. Congrats. I'm sure you will find that it is really inspiring even.

Yeah, I already had a band lined up to record them live but we were limited to 8 channels, blessing indeed :) They are gonna pay me $100 to bring in my gear and run my own mics seperate from the club (small venue that does not mic drums) and provide them with some clean live captures that they will mix themselves. I can now also point a couple of my cheaper condensors at the crowd.

Cool, Tripps! Now just remember, when you start to think that sixteen tracks aren't enough to record a live band, remind yourself that they really ARE.

Are you sure the crowd deserves condensers?

HaHa, they deserve some Behringer C2's, 60$ for a matched pair with the little stereo mounting bracket.

Congrats on the Mackie, its nie to pick things up at a killer price indeed.

On the C2' you might also look into the Samson CO2's as they come in a truly matched pair for like $109.00. The Behringer's are a good mic but sadly they are not even close to being matched even though they state that they are. The price is alittle more but they are pretty close to working like a pair of the Oktava MK-02-01 units which I dearly love. But the catch on the Oktava is their are a few copies out there that are not real so be very careful if you go that route. But Music Go Rounds all sell the Samson units in matched pairs for that price stated above and they are killer for a cheapo mic indeed.

And ya, 16 channels is usually enough for the most part.

I may look into those, but I already own the C2's and would rather spend money elsewhere. I used to use them as overheads until I got the NT5's and they now sit in the bottom of my closet.

I have run into times when I could use more than 8 channels but honestly think 12 would have been enough. Alas, I got the 1640 cheaper than I could the 1200f so I decided not to argue :)

Congrats! Did you ever get that UA Mic Pre? I lost track of that thread, but was watching it closely back when I had the time.

16 channels is more than enough for live, and I second your above statement; the few times I've done live recording, I've seldom found the need for more than 12 channels, unless dealing with a new age-pop band of course (they tend to add keyboards, another guitar, a DJ/"effects" guy, and so on.")

On another note, I know since you're living in Alaska, you have a hard time finding sweet gear at a reasonable price and I have a hook up at Guitar Center (60% off most things in the store), so if you plan on getting anymore gear in the near future, let me know and I'll see if I can get it for you on the cheap. Just pay the shipping (and gear cost (after you receive the gear of course) and you may find more gear within your reach.

Example: Just bought a pair of Yamaha HS50M's (retail $199 each) for $220. Also have a Silver burst Les Paul Custom LE on order, $599 usually, got it for $379. So after shipping, it should work out to about the store cost if you were to buy them here on items like this I'm guessing.

NOTE: This is not an advertisement! This is just for you Cpt, because I know how it must be to get gear up there, and I've already run it past my buddy. (I was born and raised in BFE Maine, so I feel your pain.)

Wow, sweet man. I appreciate that bigtime. And honestly, this is the only site on the web that I would trust someone with my $$$ :)

And no, I never got the UA I wanted as I never found the right price.

On the 16 channels, I have some extra drum mics as I only run a 4 piece. I'm thinking I could do the following, it may be overkill on the drums but oh well, I don't "have" to use them and I've always wanted to try double micing drums.

2xGuitar
1xBass
3xVox
1xKick
2xSnare
2xHTom
2xLTom
2xOH
1xCrowd

That is what I plan on running at our next gig.

Quick question guys. For the most part I can place my own mics when doing live gigs as double mic'ing a guitar cab is painless and offers no negative aspect to me (recording) or the venue engineer (mixing).

But... when it comes to vocals you can't ask someone to sing into two mics of course. I basically need an isloated xlr splitter correct? Would this thing do me justice? I figure 1 for the bass and 3 for vox. What do you think?

Does anyone know of a similar product they can recommend? This one is backordered.

The one I suggested was the Rappco one. The one your looking at CptTripps is much nicer. The fact that it has a ground lift will help.

I don't know if you work with the same company all of the time. But, you might get lucky from time to time. Call up the company doing the audio. They just might have a 3 way split.

I know that all to the audio snakes that we have are 3 way. 1- direct, 2-iso's.

So... I tossed the mixer on craigslist at a much higher price thinking I would not get it. I was wrong. I have a chance to make $600 profit off this thing, should I do it? I really really wanted it, but with the extra $600 on top of the $1000 I could get two kickass 8 channel interfaces and link them.

What would you do?

Cpt!... you are supposed to record the band THEN sell it for a profit! ...sheesh...

But, look at it this way...

1. Is it what you want?

2. Would you risk trying something you might not like.

3. could you sell THAT for a profit too :)

I dunno, being newer equipment there's no real personal or collectors connection to it. But is the headache of buying different equipment going to be worth $600 :)

I have no connection and would probably not be using the full mixer functions, basically I was getting 16 very nice pre-amps for $1000. With $1600 I am thinking I could link a couple 8 channel rackmount interfaces together. The mackie 1200F looks fantastic if I could find it around $1000.

I guess I need to research more. Anyone have suggestions for a 8-channel interfaces that have top notch pre's and link together? I would like to have 64 bit vista support but it is not required.

Noize, you have setup the Motu gear alot. The 8pre has very nice quality pre-amps yes? I could get two of those and a new laptop :)

Tripps, that is one of the pieces I would love to have here if I didn't have a big desk.

But ya, the Pre-amps on it are nice and quiet. And the sound is what I would call pretty. Very clean without any crap, you can clip them but you have to be pretty careless to do it.

The thing I like most about the MOTU pieces is the software interface. Its called CueMix DSP and it is the best GUI I have seen for any interface at all. YOu know I like my ESI and its GUI for its routing capability, but CueMix absolutely blows it away.

One word of warning though, make absolutely certain you have a TI firewire chip. If so you are in like Flynn.

I have to say MOTU is the most rock solid gear out there.

What kind of price are you getting the 8pre for, if you don't mind me asking?

See, price was an issue before as I had about $1000 to spend. Two 8pre's plus shipping would have put me over that by quite a bit. With an extra $600 though I should have no problems. I was actually thinking of hitting up Keith to see what kind of price he can get.

Prie seems to be around $550. I would probably end up spending $13-1400 with shipping though.

Edit: Ok I have a person coming over tonight to pick it up. I decided I am going to dump it all back into interfaces and get the 896mkIII plus one of the 8pre's. The new 896 is just too good to pass up since I have the cash. I am also selling off my UX8 for $400 so it looks like I still won't have to dip into funds past the initial $1000.

If anyone can get an 896mkIII cheaper than $995 and an 8pre less than $549 please let me know :)

The 896 mkIII is still pretty new so I doubt it will go down much for a little bit. That is about as cheap as I have seen them at the moment. The 8pre is about the same. I haven't seen very many at all on ebay or anything. So that is probably a good sign that no one is selling them.

I'll keep my ears open though if I find anything I'll let you know.
