External Hard Drive in Home Studio setup

I just bought a 500GB Western Digital My Book Studio Edition, and I'm about to reinstall Windows Vista and all my music software on my laptop.

I was wondering which applications (windows vista files, cubase SX 3, vst instruments, samples/soundbanks, .wav recording files, etc.) should I install on which drive (internal 150GB or external 500GB) to get the best performances.

My external hard drive is hooked up with Firewire.

Thanks!

i install all programs to the internal C drive, then i save all songs/tracks/etc. to the other drive....that way, one drive is reading most of the time, while the other is writing.

Would it be alright to put all the sample banks on my external hard drive? I'd be able to store more of them since my internal drive is only 150GB, and will already contain the apps and windows vista.

yeah, i'm sure it would be ok, but i still keep all of my samples on the c drive....150 gigs is plenty of space, how much of it is full already? heck i think i've only got 2 or 3 gigs tops of samples...if that really, i bet it's closer to 1.

I guess I'd have enough space on my main drive if I transfer my recording files on my external drive, but with my recent purchase of BFD2 (65GB I think?), I might come short on space, and I don't want my main drive having only ~15% of free space.

That really helps though, thanks for answering my question :)

I put all my samples and banks on the extra drive. I NEVER have them on the C or OS drive at all. That will slow things down a great deal if they are on the same drive as the software.

So yes, put them on the external drive indeed.

what about vst plug ins etc...... can they be stored on an external drive and used normally in say sonar without any detremental effects to the speed in which they process???

VST pluggins don't take up much space and don't tax the C drive the way reading samples does. So the VST files which are mostly just .dll files are fine on the C drive.

Its just the audio type data like large sample pools and libraries that really should be on a separate drive.
