Tascam DR-1

Well I did it. I have long been an advocate for mini disc field recording but tonight I decided to stimulate the economy and bought a Tascam DR-1 recorder with my rebate money. Its a bit larger than a mini disc recorder, I would say roughly the size of a PDA but it has built in mic's and mic preamps. My current mini disc rig consisted of the recorder, a home built mic pre and then the mics so although its physically larger it should prove to be a little less cumbersome. I'll post up some sound clips after I have had some time to play with it.
By the way, I still think mini disc recorders are a great way to field record as far as sound quality goes.

So I have had a little time to play with this recorder and there are things that I love and things that are annoying. On the positive side the unit is very easy to use and makes clean, clear recordings. The negative side is that although the on-board mics sound good they pick up every little bit of movement you make while touching the recorder. Also you will really need to make or adapt some sort of windscreen as the slightest breeze can cause troubles. For my use none of these issues are a factor because I am using my homemade binaural mics that have windscreens. Here is a little recording I made this weekend. I have done nothing to it except a bit of compression for volume. This effect works best if you wear headphones but you can still gauge the sound quality without.
