The above is the Rode K-2

The groove tube equivalent I guess.

I'm editing this post with this mic as well...

The mic will be used for male and female vocals as well as acoustic guitar through a UA tube preamp into the Apogee duet.

It would take me weeks if not months to test out all the vocal mikes out there and I'd rather trust the pro's here on this site which have more than likely used them.

Any other options/alternatives would be most helpful and I thank you in advance.

I have the K2 and love it, alas I have not been able to A\B it against a bunch of other tube mics, but from my experiences I would say it's well worth the $500 I spent on ebay. It does very well with vox both male and femal, makes a nice room mic for the drums, is used as a distant mic when recording guitars and did a pretty good job recording my acoustic guitars and this was all through my line 6 pre's.

Now I'm not sure, but is tube mic through a tube pre gonna create too much warmth?

It's funny you mention that Cpt Tripps b/c I asked that very question to my friend last night! That was is a tube mic into a tube pre-amp "too much"?

I don't know but being the old school guy that he is, his answer was not shockingly....f*** no! LOL

The only negative thing I heard about the K2 is that it was a "dark" sounding mike. If you love it I have to assume it has a nice full sound with a nice natural top end right??

I appreciate your input

Oh btw I checked out your gear and I have the same vox amp! I love mine and if you like what that does you'll love the tonelab desktop model for recording. It's (to me) the best kept secret for great guitar recorded guitar tones.

We just finished a demo and If I'm allowed I could try and upload it? Emm... how do I do dat?

i could do a straight vox capture if u want to hear it. 0% processed so you can hear its natural tone.

Hey Zell, good choices on all of them. The GT is actually pretty much even with the Rode K2 for the most part. Both are great sounding mic's for vocals and some other stuff.

Now the Mojave is another story completely. That is indeed a great mic for that price. David Royer is the man behind that one. Best known for his Ribbon mics.

I've used the Mojave MA-200 and can tell you it is an absolute killer mic. With the pre amp you have chosen in will really shine. If it is possible you could go out and A/B them to see about the difference in sound. But I'll let you know I have used all three mics and MA-200 used with a high end pre amp will sound a good deal different from the others. Can't really describe how the sound is different, but it is smoother and warmer in a good way.

Hey Noize... Ya I have to admit, that's the one I really had my eye on. Naturally, it's the more expensive one! Somebody stop me before I hurt myself! LOL

BTW Noize I ordered a refurbished Mac Pro 8 core with quad 3.0 GHz processors. Today....(along with logic pro 8) It only has 1 GiG of Ram, but I'm going to OWC to get probably an 8 gig upgrade. I'm feeling a little faint...

Still no monitor. I'm thinking of possibly a Dell instead for less than half the apple one. I dunno

Ya, it is more expensive and also a bit wider range as far as covering the high end that the others drop off slightly at.

Starting out with 1 gig will be fine I am sure. It will give you a chance to see if you need 8 or maybe just 4.

And the monitor thing. Ya, a cheaper monitor will work just fine. My pair of 19" wide screen Samsung's only cost me around $129.00 each on a Black Friday sale at Best Buy and they work just fine.

Point well taken. I have to thank you again for getting me to put the brakes on. The only reason I was contemplating the apple monitor was b/c of the fire ware inputs. I don't think that much really matters besides the pure simplistic nature of it which is so darn appealing.

I think I hear ya in saying the money I would save in a monitor downgrade could be better spent getting the better mic which I really want which I'm sure you would agree is WAY more important in getting great sound to tape...errr... 0's and 1's.

BTW I listened to your production/tracking/engineering...etc/ of some your wrap/soul work which I thought were outstanding and which were dead on mixes for that genre of music; Probably completely my personal polar opposite in style, (lol) but it's not about that, but all about a great ear which you obviously have, and making someone's idea translate effectively or dare I say commercially to a radio-ready 2-track end product!

Kuddos bro! I'm not sure I can upload what my friend and I just recently completed as a 3 song cover demo but shoot me an email if you don't mind and walk me through that process.

I'm (currently) more assuredly a musician/songwriter than an engineering guru but I've been recording and producing my own crap since the first 4 tracks came out decades ago.I've always been reaffirmed and encouraged by others being impressed by what I did and it advanced through and up until a CD I did with a Roland 24 track (I think) all in one unit thing. I sorta quit that part of life till recently.

I have to say the quality and stuff out there now is simply mind-blowing and I wouldn't have a clue if not for all you good souls helping me out along the way.

That demo I've mentioned done on my friend's Imac/cubase 3/prosonus inter./ with a Rick bass, Tak acoustic, Tele's through a VOX tonelab, and a groove-tube vocal mike sounds SO much better than anything either one of us have ever recorded to date. And my friend actually has recorded in a pro studio with an actual vintage Beatles era Neuman (sp??) tube mike!

I gotta lot of... "catching up to do" I guess is my long-winded, late-night point (lol) but this is THE best forum I've found on the net by far.

Ok... over and out! I just can't wait to get this studio together ERRR!!

PSS. If anyone knows where I can get a set of Dynaudio BM5-A'monitors for a good price PLEASE let me know.... It's next on my list! HA

And I'll put this on the proper thread topic but I'm really impressed with the Izotope 3 mastering plug-in vs the Waves one if anyone has any thoughts on matter. It's cheaper, it seems completely thorough and is way cheaper.

Not to mention the co. has for anyone to download a 64 pg lesson on mastering tools, what they do, and how to use them effectively for free. Gotta love that ay?

Warm regards all

I will dink around tonight if I can get time to record something. I picked up a 24" samsung from bestbuy for $450, best studio addition I've done lately, really helps come mix time.
