Mackie 802-VlZ3 and the M-Audio FrireWire 1814

do you think this is a good mix of hardware?
will I get a bit more out of my music by combining this 2?

Pros? and Cons?

many thanks for your educated opinion

P.S. I will be recording instruments.

Should be dandy.

as opposed to . . . ?

With the mackie, you should be able to keep 3 inputs separate (using alt outs) and then plug 2 mics into the 1814, and have 5 preamped mic inputs at once.

I can't see how there'd be any drawbacks, unless you wanted to record more inputs simultaneously.

Reading again, if you're just recording one source at a time, you can input 2 preamped signals on the 1814, so you wouldn't need the mackie.

Now, if the mackie preamps are better (they might be) then it may be worth the extra step of using the mackie.

Otherwise, for only 2 inputs at a time, just use the 1814. If you're using more, then by all means, use them both, as stated above, and enjoy.

pjk, very well, thanks!!

so basically, it is worth the "extra step" both the makie and the 1814?. no need for tube amps?

I am using Logic Pro 8

many thanks again!

Tube Amps? like tube preamps?

nah, I don't think so. If you're not gonna spend 500+ per channel, then use the ones you have. Later, when you feel that they're holding you back, and yearn to improve your sound (and can hear the difference), they'll always be there.

Yes, if you need more than 2 preamp signals at one time. If you're doing 1 source at a time, like 1 guitar cab, then 2 preamps will do you fine. If you're thinking to do 2 acoustic guitars at once, you may have 6 signals, 4 of them mic inputs, and 2 line inputs. Then it's worth the extra $$$ for more preamps, and maybe routing flexibility.

And the mackie preamps may be better than the 1814 preamps. Probaby not much, if any, but it's possible. I don't know, so I can't give any real 'worth' to that idea.

Though, if you're doing just 2 preamps at a time, you may find youself thinking "I don't need this mixer", so think it through accordingly.

Are you dead set on M-audio? I'm guessing this is because you're planning on using "Pro" Tools M-Powered? For the same price, maybe even a little cheaper, you can get a Presonus FireStudio with a sizeable software package. 8 reasonable preamps built in.

Well, it is a mixer. If you have need to mix signals together before sending to a PA, or power amp, then this fits in.

This may help pre-mix keyboards, before sending to a house mix.

I use my mixer mostly for it's preamps, though I also route signal back into it, and send the collection of signals to my headphones, or to my monitors.

As far as recording goes, and you haven't purchased anything yet, then I'd agree with Hueseph, and look into devices that have preamps, and interface all in one. Like the presonus stuff listed, or one of my eye candy, the MOTU 8Pre. 8 preamps, with MOTU quality. yum.

oh Wow, that is some information, thanks so much....I had already purchased the 1814 a year ago, and was looking to complement it, with like a mixer, nothing big, but something that can adapt to mixing, recording etc, with my DAW, LOGIC8 I am not in to ProTools., I do "Electro Acoustic Music" and so I do use the keyboards and live instruments..

what do you guys think?
