Sabbath cover

Ok, its a rough mix of a Sabbath cover. Im having neck problems again and they are doing injections tomorrow. So I spent this evening (from 6pm to 1am) whipping this out. Needs more work. Im not happy with the guitars. I need to tweek my amp or amps or gt8 to get that sound on the original tune. Its a combo of Bass guitar and guitar that is unbelievable on the original. But I wanted to do some recording before Im laid up for a few days. Plus I cant sleep, so Im pulling an all nighter. The tune is "Lord of this World" off of "Masters of Reality". Still needs some tweeking. Link www.soundclick.com/util/g...419005&q=hi

The tone isnt right on the guitars. Too much distortion and the eq is wrong. The guitars need more mid and low end. But maybe I shouldnt try to duplicate the tone. Just keep it my version. The snare needs some compression. and the overheads need work. Oh yea, that was some big *** needle getting jabbed in my neck.

I'm listening on laptop speakers, so take that into consideration. Not the best quality.

Just basing things on 30 odd years of listening to Black Sabbath:

1. The bass seems to have a little too much prescence (i.e. harmonics). I'd pull some of the treble off there to get a nice "round" sound with just a little growl. If you're playing this with a pick, don't.

2. EQ the toms a little to be more in line with the bass tone.

3. The guitar seems to have the mids, and the right tone, but is lacking at the low end. Iommi tended to play things up the neck on the lower strings (e.g. playing an E on the 12th fret rather than starting on the A string at the seventh...does that make sense?). It makes for a darker sound. Also, try to limit your upswings on picking if you haven't already. Iommi was very much in the downstroke vein. Then add a little more low end. Don't be frightened. Add a little more low end.... I know your instinct is telling you to roll off the guitar EQ at 80Hz, but don't. Just a hint (a HINT) of phaser....

Other than that, the playing is great. I love that album.

As I haven't listened to much Sabbath, IMO... The only thing I hear is the bass drum is playing peek-a-boo... You can hear it sometimes, then others it's hiding.

CynicEidolon: Sinner.

Go and get "We sold our souls for Rock'n'Roll" immediately.

(dB-Wan might try to tell you that "Mob Rules" or something is better....Don't listen to him)

Just kidding dB-Wan. It's all good.

Nah, I actually lean more toward the Ozzy and Ian ... I love Dio, but I like him better solo than with Sabbath ... much respect tho.

Huge Ian Gillan fan (arguably the finest rock singer ever), but funnily enough not for his Sabbath tenure. Loved Purple, loved Gillan (the band). "Heaven and Hell" was a stunning album, but I think Dio was better with Rainbow.

Now, "Warning" and "The Wizard" from the first album....Stunning stuff.
In fact most of the first album.....

In my opinion (I think we've traveled this road before) Born Again was one of Sabbath's finest works and a defining album in the evolution of Sabbath.

For Dio, great with Rainbow, I loved Holy Diver, Last in Line not so much, good, but not great...still, gotta respect the inventor of

You talk about these guys like it were yesterday. I know who they are but, your modern 19 year old doesn't listen to much stuff like that... Well, okay, SOME Sabbath. But, not much.

If you do listen to them, you will be listening to the music that influenced the musicians you ARE listening to.

Black Sabbath were almost inarguably the inventors of heavy metal.

Yeah, I was born in the 70's and listened to sabbath throughout school and to this day. The thing with sabbath, they are timeless and will never get old. They indeed inspired modern metal and I thank them for that.

Also, all the metal kids in town that I know do listen to Sabbath. I guess your right that the average 19yo does not, but any metal fan should.

And yeah, no shame in the BB man, one of the greats that also inspired the next generation. I am a big Louis Armstrong fan myself :)

P.S. Sabbath w\Ozzy>Sabbath W\Dio, Dio is super amazing, but I liked him in his own band better. Ride the TIGER!!!

Dio: High noon, you know I'd sell my soul for water....

Genius. Rainbow, though....

Anyway, back to the Sabs. :) As dB-Wan mentioned, these are the guys that started it all. Really.

The first time I heard Tool I thought..."Hmmm, it's so Black Sabbath"
Same with Smashing Pumpkins
Same with Bush

Just tell me that "Fairies Wear Boots" doesn't move something in your soul!
Inspired guitar playing.

Any rock fan should own at least one album.
"Sweet Leaf"

ALRIGHT NOW!
Won't you listen?

When I first met you, didn't realize
I can't forget you, for your surprise
you introduced me, to my mind
And left me wanting, you and your kind

I love you, Oh you know it

My life was empty, forever on a down
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf, though you can't hear

Come on now, try it out

Straight people don't know, what you're about
They put you down and shut you out
you gave to me a new belief
and soon the world will love you sweet leaf
Fairies Wear Boots is awesome. Paranoid was probably my favorite of all their albums.

The first time I heard sweet leaf I was listening to a greatest hits album, falling asleep on my bed and all of a sudden that hacking sound that starts the song came on...I remember almost crapping my pants waking up all freaked out from the sound...

Totaly agree with guitar tone. It was a plug in stuff and go. I have to play Bass with a pick. Not very good without it. The original has alot of low end to the guitar which I lack. Im gonna try and get it closer, but to do a exact copy of the tone, Im not gonna try. Yep drums need help (compression, etc.). I didnt have time to mix it properly. Spent maybe 15 minutes on levels and that was about it. I thaught about Sweet Leaf, but wanted one that you dont hear alot. I have another from Masters, I am gonna do. But Im gonna do Alice Cooper "Halo of Flies" next. Or another original

That has my vote!

I've taken down every cover we ever did from everywhere on the web. Time to focus on our own stuff and make a name for ourselves not further someone else's career.

I redid the overall eq on the rendered song. It was a quick, somewhat effective, fix. Once I get time to spare I will fix individual tracks.

Nice work Bushmaster ! We used to do this one back in the day... didn't sound this good, though . REALLY dug the jam-out to the ending !!! Bass guitar sounds fine, here... plenny o growl . I can't believe I'm going to say this, but... I could'a used a little more cowbell(2:05ish)... personal preference . : )

Yeah... it was that thread about favorite/hated mixes . Born Again was prolly the ev-al-est-sounding Sabbath album ever...HA... that introductory scream that Gillan unleashes on Disturbing The Priest is straight out of hell . What a great combination, Gillan and Sabbath ! I love Sabbath and Deep Purple... it simply does not get any heavier ! You can drop-tune your seven-string, gargle razorblades, and sacrifice groupies at your show, but you'll never be as HEAVY as the Sabbath or Purple out of the early seventies . They are the well-spring from which SO many bands are derived, and rightly so .

Jeez, all this Sabbath talk makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

The boyz and I spun up some vinyl the other night and put on an import master disc I have of Master of Reality. I think I scared the neighbors as we had it cranked through the big Peavey's and shook the house. I think I had a flash back as well.

I finally watched part of "The Last Supper" (Sabbath Reunion Tour DVD). Very nice !!! If you have not seen it, buy it. Especially you younger fellows. Geezer Butler is amazing on the Bass, hell they all are. Even Ozzy is singing very well, but he does have a tele-prompter for lyrics :) Sounds really good in Dolby 5.1

Ozzy does rule, but he's also very sad...his music was such a major influence on me whether with Sab or solo (Bob Daisley rocks da bass), but today he is so burnt...I mean, he still rocks, but needs teleprompters, can't hold his pee and poop (he doesn't dump water on himself without good reason) and is completely impossible to understand while speaking...it's just sad...I can't watch him in interviews because it's just plain painful to see a childhood hero in that shape.

Blizzard of Oz is still one of the great metal albums ever.

Ya, its kind of a bummer in that way for sure. And ya, he's been dumping water on himself now for years, and that is indeed sad. But hey, I'll give him credit for at least finding a way to still get out there and entertain.

But ya, talking he should just give that up. He has gotten a little better though, but still mumbles and is hard to understand 95% of the time.

Oh man I forgot that Ray Gillen sang for Sabbath briefly. I was a huge Badlands fan in high school so I was reading the Wiki about Gillen not too long ago and was surprised that he had a brief stint in Black Sabbath. It made it sound like he wasn't all he was cracked up to be and was ousted pretty quickly when his songwriting skills were obviously sub-par. But man he could sing. We did High Wire for our 10th grade talent show :)

Yeah Blizzard is one of the golden moments in rock history. Too bad it wasn't an equally golden moment in sound engineering history. Rhoads was such a good talent but man that guitar tone on that album was pretty bad, and the drums sound like they hadn't graduated from the early 70s yet. But I still wore out my copy of Blizzard before I was out of high school.

Yeah, someone else noticed.....!!!

I remember having the 12" vinyl single of a live 10 minute "Mr. Crowley" where the solo was just phenomenal. Wore that out.

Ya, tis funny how far we've come in the mixing department. I agree that the tone of that album was far from what it might have been. I think it was something that was done so quick without much work on the end product as far as the engineering goes. Sad but true. Imagine what some of Rhoads stuff might have sounded like had he lived to the now.
