Hi, i noticed some things that i think may be the problem, first the voice sounds very "roomy" not as in a long reverb of course but it seems to have a lot of diffuse sound on it, one of the reasons could be that you have a lousy soundig room, or that you are very far away from the mic (or a combination of both).

In the edited version, i noticed two things, first that the gating of the voice is very rough and i think you may overcompressed the vocals.

My advice: try experimenting with mic distance, leave more release in the gate or lower the threshold, and also play with the compressor in different parts of the chain and loosen the compression so the voice "breaths" (for example i may be wrong but it sounds like you first eq'ed and then you compressed, try doing it the other way around) also play with the attack and release settings of the comp so the transients of the voice wont suffer from heavy compression.

Another more simple solution to try is if you have another mic pre-amp and mic and try recording it just to see the difference, perhaps the AT4040 eventhough i think its a great mic maybe it wont suit your voice. Other thing i forgot to mention is that it also sounds as poor mic pre-amp a little of what i call "plastic" so thats why i suggested trying another mic pre.

I hope this helps

Are you processing the vocal at all on the way in or is it dry?

yea i think imm get another soundcard,i think my pres are goin...i have my room treated pretty good, acoustic wise..so i unno..

the vocals come in thru my soundcard raw, then i do a 4;1 attack compression normalize and then i eq a bit

Get a good pop screen or two even and put them up close to the mic. Get intimate with the mic. You need to take advantage of proximity if you want to get any bottom out of your voice. From what I heard there probably isn't a lot of low end in your voice to begin with. You could try an SM58 for this as well. The thing is proximity. The closer you are to the mic, the more low end there will be.

Also, check and make sure you didn't accidentally turn on the high pass filter on the mic.

Hueseph makes a good point, closer to the mic reflects in bigger sound, further away means more natural sound, but for it to sound naturally good you need to have a good room so if you dont have a good sounding room, try "bigger"

also make sure that your pre and post eq arent canceling each other out. dramatic, opposing eq curves can kill your tone. boosting one while cutting the other ect. -joep

the size of the room is not as important as the sound of the room, for example you may have a big warehouse that has a lot of acoutical problems although it may be very very big.

It is also true that in most big rooms you may be further away from the mic as theres less diffuse sound poportion compared to direct sound, and in a smaller room theres more diffuse sound proportion compared to the direct sound (opposite of what one may think, bigger more diffuse, smaller less difusse). In lame terms this means get closer to the mic in small rooms, and get farther away in bigger rooms (this only applies if the big room has a good sound, by bad sound i mean standing waves, reflections, or plain yuck!)
