Simple Recording Question

Hey Everyone,

I am trying to use a Lexicon Omega and Cubase LE on a new laptop to record an upright piano in my home studio.

I set everything up, and put on my headphones. The instrument sounds absolutely wonderful when I listen to the direct mic input, nice and clean.

However, when I turn on the monitor when I am playing or play back what I have just recorded, the whole thing sounds a bit washed out, dampened and less crisp.

I am not using any effects, so I am wondering why the playback doesn't sound as good as the direct does through the headphones. Perhaps something is less than optimal in my set-up, but it all looks good to me. What should I try?

Thanks for your help,
Kelvin

So it doesn't sound good through your monitors as it does through headphones? That's the issue?

Well, I'd suggest you need to harmonically balance the mix, which is basically the task of EQing the mix to find the best sound across all listening environments. This can be done manually, or with a tool such as HarBal www.har-bal.com

EQ might help, but the real problem is that the playback sounds quite different from the direct I listen to live when I record.

Maybe I need to update or change my ASIO driver somehow

The playback should sound as good as the direct-through. My first thought was that your sampling settings are at less-than-optimal values. Check to see that the Omega and Cubase are set up for the same sample rate, preferably 44.1 kHz or higher. Just a thought.

Hey, double checked the Omega settings and the Cubase settings.
It wasn't the Sample Rate, but I was able to figure out what was off.
Thanks!

It was the "make it sound good" button that now comes in Cubase LE instead of just ProTools. :P
