Not getting playback through PC

I’m completely new at home recording – just getting started and could use some help.

I am starting out with the Alesis MultiMix8 Firewire running to my vista pc (6-pin on both ends) and editing in Cubase LE4 (it came with the unit).

I have the meters working on the Alesis and can record and playback the saved track, but I can’t hear what I am recording as I record it on the PC. I can hear through the head phone jacks of the Alesis, but I want to monitor the Cubase sound through my pc speakers. I have clicked the monitor button, but maybe I am missing something.

I’ve also tried using the creative wave studio that I have and various things to see if I can just hear the sound through the pc and just can’t get it working.

I’d rather not buy a set of external powered speakers at this time….I’m saving and building up as I can, but my wife is ready to return this unit, but I’d like to get it working. Any guidance/help is appreciated.
