Did anybody catch James Taylor's "One Man Band" show on the PBS "Great Performances" show? Check out this clip, in which he uses an unusual drum machine:

All do respect to James Taylor, I've never seen a room full of so many people with no rhythm.

I gotta agree that was pretty damn cool. Herb, if you build one I'm sure you can sell one to OD and myself.

Theres probly a midget under there pulling strings to make it work.

It's powered by a forsaken child.

If ever a genie jumps out of a bottle and grants me a wish I'm asking for James Taylors voice.

I believe he took a couple of years off in the 70's (well, aside from the obvious) just to practice guitar playing. His playing is so second nature.

I got to see him at the Santa Barbara county bowl a few years ago. I was right next to the sound desk. Amazing.

He is coming to Vancouver very soon. Might go to see him but my concert budget is getting a bit thin these days.

The sound of a stick hitting a drum?

Yes, there's something magical about real instruments. Even though I love my drum program, it's just not the same as wood on skin...

Well the snare was a given, but the kick tone is what I was referring to.

Yeah what was up with the kick? It was like a giant wooden block or something...didn't look like a traditional kick drum.

kick is just a big wooden box... sound hole is probably facing away from the audience... plus there looked to be rubber pads on the 2x4s
