Did anybody catch James Taylor's "One Man Band" show on the PBS "Great Performances" show? Check out this clip, in which he uses an unusual drum machine:

Somebody stayed up all night in the wood shop.
I'm off to Home Depot.
Mar 15, 2008 01:52 pm All do respect to James Taylor, I've never seen a room full of so many people with no rhythm.

Mar 17, 2008 02:24 pm I believe he took a couple of years off in the 70's (well, aside from the obvious) just to practice guitar playing. His playing is so second nature.
I got to see him at the Santa Barbara county bowl a few years ago. I was right next to the sound desk. Amazing.

The sound of a stick hitting a drum?
Yes, there's something magical about real instruments. Even though I love my drum program, it's just not the same as wood on skin...

Mar 18, 2008 12:39 pm Well the snare was a given, but the kick tone is what I was referring to.

Mar 18, 2008 03:00 pm Yeah what was up with the kick? It was like a giant wooden block or something...didn't look like a traditional kick drum.

Mar 18, 2008 03:13 pm kick is just a big wooden box... sound hole is probably facing away from the audience... plus there looked to be rubber pads on the 2x4s

Do what you can to go to this one. You'll never regret it.
